25 Songs That You Should Add to Your Playlists

By on July 25, 2010
  1. Monte Montgomeryhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=glBwJWdSqCY
Monte Montgomery is one of the most Amazing acoustic guitarists around. I doubt many of you have heard him play but once you do, you will be in shock. Although he plays a country hybrid style I love every single song he has played.
  2. Mad Season- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_rRf3UTGloE
Layne Staley had one of the most incredible voices of all time, I was always and always will be a fan of Alice in Chains, but I honestly believe had Mad Season put out more than one album they would have gone down as one best bands of our time.
  3. Morphine- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D1AZ6nXeEAk
If you are looking for a mellow time while having to decipher riddles than you really need to give Morphine a look. Again, a death to young from a drug overdose these guys would have really pushed music in a much different direction.
  4. Slightly Stoopid- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=huBYJP8l7Fg
Many compare these guys to Sublime, I can see the influence but they play a different style all together. Granted they talk about the beach, drinking and chronic pot smoking so that alone would force me to enjoy them. I do really think they are well put together and one of the few good, fun, bands around. Not to mention the live show is a freaking blast.
  5. Immortal Technique- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6b0S4gKAk68
The best rapper mainstream has never seen. This dude is lyrical beast, he is the type of rapper that can make anybody pay attention to a cause. Known for his Political, in your face, animalist rhymes he indeed pushes the limits. From blaming the world trade center attacks on George W. Bush to saying the U.S. government is the reason there is major cocaine issue, he will say what is on his mind and you will enjoy watching him do it.
  6. Hooked on Tonics- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WbSyQTXmuX4
Yes I know you have NEVER heard of these guys, but I love them. One of the best live shows ever. A local Akron/Canton Ohio band that tours nonstop. The may not be well known, but I think that’s how they like it. These guys have a couple of their own albums, and cover artists such as Britney Spears, Prince, Red Hot Chili Pepers, Warren G, and Sublime.
  7. Tiger Army- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UxvTTRKvfEU
A psychobilly/rock band from California they actually have some good songs and although they may not be the best at what they do, the song I linked is one of their best.
  8. Black Rebel Motorcycle Club- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9BSJGclcN1I
  9. Hollywood Undead- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1NHRo_HNSFI
Rock/Rap, and a little bit of Emo all thrown together by these Masked Men of Hollywood Undead. They are just one of those nasty dirty bands that spread smiles with their lyrics.
  10. Samhain- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MnJzYJG_IyY
Glen Danzig does it again, jumping from The Misfits to Samhain and not really ever forgetting his strength in Punk style of music.
  11. The Nightwatchmanhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZC-kn2xvwME
Who would have thought a Harvard graduate that rocked the stage with Rage Against the Machine and Audioslave would turn it around and bust out an acoustic album with so much depth and melody. Tom Morrello is one of the hardest working guys in music and that is a lucky thing…for all of us.
  12. TSOL- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w6t8zsr3g8I
  13. Street Sweeper Social Club- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vF2jcGbYbQo
Tom Morrello strikes again with some help from Bay area Rapper Boots Riley. These 2 blast a funk based groove with major feedback and lyrics to make you think.
  14. X- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wRWunSUmEm4
X is one of the original American punk bands. One of my all time favorite Punk bands, they will not leave you disappointed.
  15. The Misfits- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HJpaqOFjJME
The Poster Children of horror punk and with out a doubt one the most original bands ever.
  16. Dink- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LvkXyAmG1B4
Again you will not know these fellas but this song rocked in the 90’s and still rocks now. At the beginning of the industrial scene they broke out in the Akron/Cleveland areas in Ohio to be one of the best local bands of their time.
  17. Down- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FBLbrJxGtro
Pantera lead singer goes swampy, Phil Anselmo leaves the texas based Pantera to form Down, a Louisiana Cajun metal band, they growl dark lyrics with blistering guitars.
  18. Pantera- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AkFqg5wAuFk
In my opinion, the greatest heavy metal band ever. Enough Said!
  19. Daniel Johnston- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=46HEC4brycA
Insanity from a young age, but a brilliant mind for the Arts He has one of the oddest voices you will hear, and not really that good at the guitar, but he finds a way to bring everything together and what comes out is surprisingly wonderful.
  20. Eric B and Rakim- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GFOeJOtq_xc
If it was not for these guys you would not know about Jay-Z, Biggie Smalls, Naz or the Wu-Tang Clan. These are the poster children for the origins of Hip- Hop and Rap.
  21. Mike Doughty- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pDwV3QKTrGg
Lead singer of Soul Coughing, Mike Doughty went from an electronic trippy style to more radio friendly style, his earlier stuff much better than his newer music, but lyrically it’s great from 1st album to last.
  22. Prong- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SLya_k_lQL0
If you want to get pumped up and go out and smack strangers in the face you need to get amped up with Prong. With some of the meanest guitar riffs around, these guys go all out balls to wall.
  23. Lou Reed- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FH2EgYq_NCY
If I could have a drink with anybody Lou Reed would have to be in the running for top spot. A poet, an Artists, a revolutionary in the music industry. Lou Reed stayed true to himself and let the masses follow him, which they have done for over 45 years.
  24. Front 242- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lPpUFBVSyWs
  25. Jeff Buckley- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CGkr9EitDJI
One of the best song writers of all time and also having vocals that haunt you to the bone you can’t go wrong with Jeff Buckley. If he were still alive people like dave mathews, Jack Johnson, and Eddie Veder would be begging for a spot opening up for him.

    Awesome! Thanks.

  2. LISA KINSINGER says:

Great song choices for sure, Josh! Hollywood Undead may be one of the only things linking my 16 yr. old son and my thirtysomething self. He’s apparently shocked I listen to them too. Do tell what these songs mean to you and why you chose them specifically. You have a definite taste in great artists and I’d love to hear your opinion in more depth.

  3. stu says:

  4. TTroup says:

No playlist is complete without Lou Reed. Will add a few, you should elaborate on why we need these…

  5. Decker says:

Boy. Some of those sure take me back. Cruisin’ the Valley in the Caddy, heading down to Cooper’s and not a care in the world.

  6. Was surprised to see Immortal Technique on the list. VERY underground! Nice work!

  7. Tom Brock says:

Josh–Nice like seeing True Sounds of Liberty(TSOL), Mad Season & local Ohio fav. Dink!

  8. Justin says:

Dig it. Thanks for posting. The Dink song has the Misfits link, but I doubt anyone wanted to hear that shit anyway! Right, Jeff Finn?

  9. admin says:

Justin – I fixed the Dink link – thanks for pointing it out.

  10. Crystal says:

Some good choices, very good to see that Jeff Buckley and Mike Doughty made the list. Nice work.

  11. Pam says:

Hi Josh! Jeremy’s mom here. I like Alice in Chains. Lane Stanley, a mad genius. ITA about Jeff Buckley and Lou Reed. Jeff Buckley are dark broken angel. Have you listened to Shooter Jennings Black Ribbons? You would be impressed it is not what you would imagine. Its sort of a Pink Floyd The Wall for now.

  12. Rip says:

Nice list! Some refreshing old faces and a few I will start seeing more of!

  13. Dale says:

    Good list.
1st: If anyone can find Monte Montgomery playing Southern Cross I would greatly appreciate if you told me where to find it. The original is one of my favorite songs of all time and I think MM version of it is better than the original…
2nd: Throw on My Chemical Romance… they have some great great songs. Helena, Black parade, many others…. probly would surprise people that know me but these guys rock.

  14. J. says:

Morphine one of my all time long time faves…nice observation on erik b & rakim you are right on.

  15. Bryce Cook says:

Wow three punk bands, and good ones at that! Though I’m not a huge fan of most of the bands you listed I am very impressed with diversity of the list. Especially with the Rakim curveball.
