Dunedin, Fla. — Tampa Bay Rays lefty Matt Moore had his second rehab start for the Charlotte Stone Crabs in Dunedin tonight versus the Dunedin Blue Jays.  Moore, who previously pitched his first rehab start on Wednesday June 3 in Port Charlotte versus the Ft. Myers Miracle threw 52 pitches, 31 for strikes in 2 1/3 innings of work, no earned runs, 2 hits, 2 walks and 2 strikeouts.

Tonight Moore’s work was extended  to 4 innings, giving up 3 hits, no runs, 1 walk and 4 strikeouts. According to a CBSSPORTS.COM report earlier in the week,  Rays pitching coach Jim Hickey said an early July return is likely for Moore.  And the Rays would like to have Moore get five to six good rehab starts in.

As far as where the remaining rehab starts will be remains to be seen but I would imagine maybe two more with A Charlotte and then a  couple with AAA Durham.

Looking on from the stands was Tampa Bay Rays pitcher Alex Cobb.  In March Cobb was the Rays predicted opening day starter but was placed on the DL with tightness in the arm and never made the opening day active roster.  Early in May Cobb was diagnosed with a torn UCL and had Tommy John Surgery on May 15 performed by Dr. James Andrews.   Matt Moore also had the Tommy John procedure performed by Dr. Andrews in April of 2014.

So if there’s a comparison to be drawn, Cobb my be looking at a similar situation one year from now.
