The NCAA basketball tournament is just over a week away and several teams have work to do to try and impress the selection committee. The following three teams have the most work to do to move themselves from the bubble to a lock.

  1. SYRACUSESyracuse (19-12) RPI: 60; The Orange have had a disappointing season. They have had to deal with the suspension of Jim Boeheim to start the season and then an inexcusable loss to FSU to end the season. The Orange did have impressive wins against Duke and Texas A&M, both NCAA tournament bound teams, but bad losses to Clemson and St. Johns as well as an 8-9 record against RPI top 100 teams will leave the Orange needing to make an impressive run in the ACC tournament. Two or three wins in the conference tournament should make an impression and earn the Orange an invite to The Big Dance.

  2. MICHIGANMichigan: (20-11) RPI: 68; The team with the most work to do of the three teams listed, the Wolverines enter the Big 10 tournament as the eight seed. They have a 16-0 record against teams not ranked in the RPI top 100 while going 3-11 against teams ranked in the RPI top 100. The Wolverines have also lost six of their last nine games. Anything short of the Big 10 title game will result in the Wolverines heading to the NIT.

  3. FL GATORSFlorida: (18-13) RPI: 54; A month ago the Gators were considered a lock for the NCAA tournament. Losers of their last three of four games, as well as a 2-8 record against top 50 teams, now have the Gators going from a lock to a team on the outside looking in. A top five non-conference schedule will allow the Gators serious consideration but just like Syracuse, two or three wins in the SEC tournament could make the selection committees’ decision a little easier.
