Saint Leo, Fla. –  The Saint Leo Lions are headed to Lakeland on Saturday for the Sunshine State Conference semi-final to take on Eckerd College.

The Lions beat the Nova Southeastern Sharks 62-57 at the Marion Bowman Activities Center last night to advance to Saturday’s bracket to play the Eckerd College Tritons at 12 noon.

Against Nova the Lions were lead by Trent Thomas’ 12 points and freshmen Cale Girten.  Girten was voted the Rocket Sports & Entertainment player of the game with 11 points, which 9 came on three huge three pointers at crucial times.

Although only playing 20 minutes,  Girten was stellar on the defensive end of the floor and nailed 3 of 5 attempts which were all from behind the arc.  During the regular season Girten only shot 24.4%  (10 for 41) from three but in the conference quarter final he made three big ones when the Lions needed them most. “He (Girten) hit the big one in the corner, that was huge shot,” Lions coach Lance Randall said.   “We really felt Dom (Robinson) or Cale needed to knock down some threes in this game.”    Girten said, “We’ve been working hard all year…our shoot arounds we go live…the coaches do a great job with the game plans we just go out and execute it.”

Trent Thomas the Lions leading scorer on the season put in 12 on the Sharks said, “I’m just super excited on how well we are playing…how we play in practice inspires us.”

The other semi-final game Florida Tech plays Florida Southern at 2:30.

The Lions and Tritons tip off the day at 12 noon  with Florida Tech and Florida southern to follow in Lakeland at the George W. Jenkins Field House on the campus of Florida Southern.
