The Bolts are in the midst of a six game home-stand with tonight being the third game.  The Philadelphia Flyers take on the Winnipeg Jets, and the Detroit Red Wings host the Buffalo Sabres. Each team stands to gain 2 points, and move ahead in the standings.  The game tonight is a crucial two points the Lightning need to keep pace to share first place in the Atlantic Division.

Erik Condra of the Lightning would be the first player of the game to commit a two minute minor penalty, at 2:29 in the first. The Maple Leafs would test their power play. Little did anyone know the Leafs would get to test the power play alot tonight.  The Leafs created an excellent scoring opportunity, but failed to put the puck past Big Ben.  Bishop would move through the game in what might become his best outing of the year.

Mike Blunden of the Tampa Bay Lightning would be the first to light the lamp, his third goal of the season. The assist to #22 Erik Condra and #77 Victor Hedman. Hedman made a long pass to Condra, who put the puck on the tape of Blunden who wristed it past #31 Netminder Garret Sparks. It was a nice goal for the Lightning giving the black clad home team the all important first lead of the game.

The Lightning created a lot of open ice and scoring chances. At 12:19 in the first #18 Ondrej Palat committed a two minute minor tripping penalty to put the Leafs on their second power play of the game. The Maple Leafs again were unable to capitalize on the man advantage and just as the teams were back at even strength, #91 Steven Stamkos wristed a shot on goal it bounced high off Sparks, and just as Sparks thought he was in the clear but not realizing the puck was still in the air directly in front of the cage, #18 Ondrej Palat knocked the puck out of mid air baseball style.  Engage the Tesla Coils it’s a Lightning goal!  A five hole shot and in the net for the Bolts second goal! Jason Garrison also picked up an assist on that one.  With Tampa Bay Rays captain Evan Longoria in attendance, Palat looks baseball ready.

The Maple Leafs put up some good attempts at scoring, but Ben Bishop wasn’t going to have it. He was stopping everything in the first period. At 19:25 #8 Connor Carrick committed a two minute interference minor to put the Bolts on the power play for the first time of the night. No goal on the power play, and the first period would end 2-0 Lightning.

The Leafs were leading the shots on goal count beginning of the second period with 15. Ben Bishop has been a busy guy in this game.   At 2:54 in the second period, the Leafs #18 Milan Michalek commits a hooking penalty to give the Bolts a chance to catch up on the shot count. The Lightning failed to capitalize, and only notched one shot on goal, when they almost allowed a short handed goal by the Maple Leafs. Back to even, play continued.

The Bolts weren’t catching up on the shot count, but when they did shoot it counted. At 6:38 in the second period, Victor Hedman roofs one for the third goal of the game and his third goal of the season! Assist to Steven Stamkos and Erik Condra. So with just 13 shots on goal, the Bolts are in the lead 3-0.

The Leafs would get their third chance at a power play at 8:14 in the second period when Nikita Nesterov commits a two minute cross checking minor penalty.  Still the Leafs come up with nothing and Victor Hedman decides to give them another chance at 11:34 with a delay of game penalty. And with one more try to Leafs again come up empty 0-4 on the power play. The Lightning are played like a play off team tonight. With just four minutes left to play in the second period, Big Ben had stopped 21 shots, looks like he is on his way to the walk of fame, possibly a shutout? A star in the making? At the end of the second period the score was Lightning 3, Leafs 0. The shot count Leafs 27, Lightning 14. Unbelievable goaltending by #30 Ben Bishop!

We were seven minutes into the third, and the Lightning just committed their third penalty of the period. This would be the seventh power play for the Toronto Maple Leafs. They have 32 shots on goal at this point. One minute into the power play, the Leafs #44 Morgan Rielly commits a two minute minor for tripping taking down Alex Killorn breaking in on Sparks short-handed.  This negated the Leaf power play and put a huge dent in the comeback possibility.

For the remainder of the game #30 Ben Bishop just continued to block the Leafs shots. Some impressive goal tending from the Maine alumn, which is more than likely his best game of the year.  Bishop earned his career high 6th shutout of the year.
