BLUE JAYS CLAIM JUAN ABREU, RECALL CARPENTER

The TORONTO BLUE JAYS have claimed RHP JUAN ABREU off waivers from the Houston Astros and will option him to Las Vegas of the Pacific Coast League (AAA).

ABREU, 27, has appeared in 38 games for Oklahoma City in the Pacific Coast League, posting a 2-3 record with a 7.09 ERA. The native of the Dominican Republic made his Major League debut last season with the Astros, going 0-0 with a 2.70 ERA in seven relief appearances. In seven minor league seasons, the right-hander is 26-22 with a 4.67 ERA in 225 games, including 17 starts.

To make room on the 40-man roster RHP SCOTT RICHMOND has been designated for assignment.

BLUE JAYS RECALL DAVID CARPENTER

The TORONTO BLUE JAYS have recalled RHP DAVID CARPENTER from Las Vegas of the Pacific Coast League (AAA) as the counter move to yesterday’s disabled list placement of 3B BRETT LAWRIE.

Lawire heads to the DL with a rib injury.  The Jays may need to expand their rehab operations as lawrie joins the list… The BLACK and BLUE Jays this year.

CARPENTER, 27, is in his 2nd Major League season having posted a 0-2 record with a 6.07 ERA in 30 relief appearances for the Astros prior to being acquired on July 20. The Morgantown, West Virginia native recorded a 1-3 record with a 2.93 ERA in his rookie season in 2011. In eight games for Las Vegas, the right-hander has posted a 0-1 record with a 1.93 ERA, while adding 14 strikeouts in just 9.1 innings.
