The TORONTO BLUE JAYS have placed C JOHN BUCK on the 15-day disabled list with a lacerated right thumb following today’s game and have selected the contract of C J.P. ARENCIBIA from Las Vegas of the Pacific Coast League (AAA).

BUCK, 30, a first-time All-Star for the Blue Jays in 2010, has appeared in 83 games, posting a .279 average with 14 home runs and 49 RBI. The Salt Lake City, Utah resident is poised to set several career highs in many offensive categories, while also becoming only the second Blue Jays catcher to be selected to the All-Star game, joining Ernie Whitt (1985). The 6’3”, 210 lb. catcher will be eligible to be activated on Friday, August 20.

ARENCIBIA, 24, has spent all of 2010 with the 51’s posting a .303 average with 31 home runs and 79 RBI in 95 games. The 31 home runs and 64 extra-base hits currently rank T-1st in all of the minor leagues this season. The Miami, Florida native batted .342 in the months of June and July, hitting 22 of his 31 home runs and recording a 21-game hit streak from June 21 – July 17. The right-handed hitting catcher has now recorded 82 home runs in the minors since being selected with the 21st overall pick by the Blue Jays in the 2007 First Year Player Draft.
