Came to see Stamkos, Got to see Vasilevskiy

By on January 28, 2016

Thirty saves, a shutout and a number one star later Andrei Vasilevskiy was all smiles after the game, “I showed them I can play NHL,” the Lightning goalie said speaking of his parents being in attendance for first time watching their son in an NHL game.

The young kid between the pipes during the media circus from Ontario that came to see their block riding native son Steven Stamkos.  Andrei Vasilevskiy stood tall and stole the show.

The Bolts came out  putting pressure on the Maple Leafs, passing and shooting the puck almost at will. Jonathan Bernier, the Leafs goalie, stood tall stopping all but one of 12 shots in the first ten minutes of the first period. Shot count was Lightning 12, Leafs 0.

The Lightning went on their first power play of the game and at 4:38 in the first period when Leafs defenseman Roman Polak is called for delay of game.  Steven Stamkos wrists one in to light the lamp for Tampa. Assists to Stralman and Filppula. “It’s Stammertime.” 1-0 Lightning.

Finally at 12:24 the Leafs get a shot on goal but Vasilevsky held them at bay, with #25 Rich Clune trying to stuff it past him. Jason Garrison answers to physically move him out of the crease.

It was starting to look like a Lightning shooting practice, when suddenly at about 15 minutes in the first the Leafs came alive. It was two, three and a fourth shot on goal. The crowd started to cheer let’s go Bolts, let’s go Bolts. Unfortunately at 17:32 Rich Clune get’s a two minute minor for goal tender interference. He is working on getting a name for himself!

The Bolts are once again on the power play. Marchessault got tripped (no call) and turned the puck over. The Leafs are able to get their sixth shot on goal shorthanded. No power play goal for the Lightning. First period ends with the shot count Lightning 17, Leafs 6. Score is 1-0 Tampa Bay.

At about the three minute mark of the second period Namestikov tries to stuff one by Leafs net-minder Bernier, but no goal. Shortly after in the Lightning zone Frank Corrado lit up Ondre Palat, and got a two minute minor for interference.

The Lightning for the third time were unable to capitalize with the man advantage.

Right after the power play was over, Kucherov received a two minute minor for “embellishing.” (unsportsmanlike conduct) The fans were not at all in agreement, and voiced their dismay. For the first time the Bolts penalty kill would be tested. Vasilevskiy was able to hold off the Leafs.

The third period began with the Lightning still leading 1-0.

I think the Lightning were trying to give this one away, #44 Morgan Rielly rung one off the post to the left of Vasilevskiy just minutes into the third.  Still 1-0.

With just under two minutes left to play, the Leafs pull their goalie, add an extra skater for the man advantage attack. The crow came alive at the Oil Can. Valiant effort by Toronto, the Lightning and Vasilevskiy hold on to their 1 goal lead!

The Lightning win 1-0!  Let’s get this expiramnetal 3 on 3 All-Star tournament started in Music City!
