Decisions, Decisions, Decisions

USFBye weeks are typically the weeks where teams work on fundamentals and maybe a new play or two.  Sometimes (for struggling teams), it is a time of self-evaluation.

For the South Florida Bulls, this was definitely a week of self-evaluation and decisions that could ultimately affect the team for the remainder of the season.

In his weekly teleconference, Coach Willie Taggert said the week would be spent working on fundamentals, execution “and making sure we have the right guys doing those things.”

One player whose job does not appear to be in jeopardy, is starting quarterback Quinton Flowers.  Despite completing just 57% of his passes for 326 yards with 5 TD’s and 3 INT’s, Flowers has shown flashes of greatness during his 3 starts this season.  He has also looked at confused at times along with a tendency to either underthrow or overthrow his receivers.

Just as frustrating has been the defense.  A lack of focus has plagued the Bulls, which was evident in the game against Maryland, where the Bulls gave up a touchdown just before halftime followed by a 45 yard kickoff return to open up the second half.  This led Defensive Coordinator Tom Allen to say the lack of effort made him “…sick to his stomach.”

Let’s not forget about the penalties.  The Bulls have had double digit penalties in 2-of-3 games with 4 of the penalties resulting in Bulls touchdowns being called back.

If the Bulls plan on making a bowl game this season, they need to fix the problems and fix them fast.  The season does not get any easier for the Bulls who take on Memphis next Friday October 2 at Raymond James Stadium.  They follow that up with a home game against Syracuse and trip to Connecticut.
