The third of four meetings between the Tampa Bay Lightning and the Montreal Canadiens (an original six team) would prove to be a head scratch for Lightning fans, but the Canadiens have won both of the previous games this year, 4-2 at Amalie Arena on December 28th, and on February 9th at the Bell Centre.

At 3:59 in the first Tyler Johnson commits a blatant hooking penalty to put the Canadiens on the power play. It’s time to put Ben Bishop and the penalty kill to the test! Montreal had several good scoring chances, but Ben Bishop just gobbled them up.

At 9:11 the Montreal Canadiens managed to notch their first goal at even strength. Goal scored by #51 David Desharnais, assist to Sven Andrighetto (that’s a different name) and #74 Alexei Emelin. At this point in the game the shot on goal count was even at 9.

From about nine minutes even for about two minutes or more, the Montreal Canadiens looked like they were on a power play at even strength. They managed to cycle the puck around, and even make a line change with out loss of possession. The Lightning needed to step up defensively to get ahead in this game. #90 Vladislav Namestikov blocked a shot with his leg, looked like he was feeling the pain but at this point that type of play is huge.

At 17:41 Montreal’s #6 Greg Pateryn commits a two minute hooking minor to put the Bolts on their first power play of the game. The Lightning managed to get three shots on goal, but not one went in the net.

I was hoping for heads up play and some urgency to begin the second period, but unfortunately at 0:52 in the second #17 Torey Mitchell scored a goal, I mean he just walked right in on Bishop. Andrej Sustr and Jason Garrison failed to impede the forward progress of the Canadiens forwrd.   The assist to #6 Greg Paytern and #74 Alexei Emelin.

Things could have gotten worse when Montreal missed on a breakaway, thank goodness! The Lightning’s Captian Steven Stamkos tried to stuff one home (above photo), but was unsuccessful. Then in front of Montreal’s netminder,  #39 Mike Condon, #81 Jonathan Marchessault and #44 defenseman Darren Dietz square off and receive matching five minute fighting penalties.

Something needed to spark the Lightning to turn this game around. The two penalized players had to sit and watch their teams play for the next five minutes from the sin bin. Then at 8:52 Ondrej Palat attempts to split the defense of Montreal, and draws a penalty. He got a penalty shot. The crowd roared, must be a fan favorite. No goal, as Condon denied Palat.

The Lightning were looking unorganized, turning the puck over at the blue line a little too much. Luckily Ben Bishop was able to stave off the Canadiens, and then #34 Michael McCarron hits #24 Ryan Callahan in the face with his stick. It was a TECO Energy powerplay, no blood, two minutes. The Lightning needed to capitalize on this one. The Lightning created a couple of really good opportunities, but still no goal and the zero remains on the board.

Back to even strength, some more good chances, Jason Garrison fired a slap shot that almost went in, but almost doesn’t count in this game.

The third period opened up looking good for the Lightning, they were cycling the puck well, getting a lot of shots on goal. At this point I’m still believing they can pull out a win tonight.

Well, now that the clock has wound down to just nine minutes left in the game, I’m doubting that the Lightning are going to be on top at the end of this contest. Shots on goal count Tampa 26, Montreal 21. I think that #39 Michael Condon wants a shutout. He’s well on his way!

It’s now or never, the Lightning need to score to win. Only three shots on goal so far this period with only six minutes left to play. At 15:25 the Canadiens put the Lightning on the power play, to give them another good scoring chance. Victor Hedman had the best scoring chance on that power play, he beamed a slap shot but it went just wide of the net.

At full strength they pulled Ben Bishop and immediately allowed Montreal to score a goal. Score 3-0 Montreal!  No Tesla Coils, just happy fans donned in red and it’s a mass exodus by the Lightning fans.
