Rock and Roll, Heavy Metal, hardcore in your face with a kick the senses type of music is what I crave the most. Granted I enjoy a nice mellow relaxing tune from time to time but my honest and 1st love of music came with Metal. Bands like Metallica, Anthrax, Pantera and King Diamond were a few of my favorites growing up. I yearn for music to grab me the way it did in my youth. Luckily there are still bands out there that continue to ROCK.

Five Finger Death Punch released an album back in July that caught my attention and I’d like to start off there.

“The Wrong Side of Heaven and the Righteous Side of Hell, Volume 1”

The album starts off with a killer track, “Lift me Up” featuring Rob Halford from Judas Priest and Fight is… well… it’s fucking awesome! What a great song, Halford and Moody actually complement each other so damn well it’s like they have been working side by side for years.

As you continue on the album you will encounter “You” as well as “Burn MF” and at that point you realize that this band is not slowing down for anybody. It’s hard, it’s direct and what Metal is supposed to be. “Dot your Eyes” (I love the title) makes me want to go out and punch strangers in the face or toss water jugs across a locker room. Since I am a fan of many genres of music I was surprised and happily so to see a song with Tech N9ne on the cover of “Mama Said Knock You Out” Tech is a perfect fit with FFDP, they should think about doing an entire album of covers.

Next up is a band that has been putting out ROCK, not Metal, not Pop, not junk, but pure good old fashioned Rock and Roll for about 15 years and I must say their latest album is one of their finest. Queens of the Stone Age released “Like Clockwork” in June and has some very diverse group of friends join them this time around. Mark Lanegan and Alex Turner help on Vocals in “If I had a Tail”, Lanegan also helped write “Fairweather Friends” which happens to have background vocals and Piano by Sir Elton John.

Other pals joined in as well, Dave Grohl plays drum on 5 tracks, Jake Shears from Scissor Sisters on vocals on two tracks.  NIN front man Trent Reznor lends his vocals on a song and in the end you have one the best ROCK albums I’ve heard in years. It’s bluesy at times, it’s heavy at times and but it sounds like QOTSA through and through.  Make sure you check out the entire album but pay close attention to “If I had a Tail” Fairweather Friends” and “The Vampyre of Time and Memory” those are my favorites on the album.

Lastly we have Ghost B.C., a Swedish Metal band that Roman Catholic priests… well…    These fella’s here remind me of a cross between Black Sabbath and King Diamond. They released “Infestissumam” back in April and I’ve wanted to write about them before that, I just needed to let them grow on me a little. Not that they are bad, I just needed to see if I would go back to them, which I have. The best song on the Album is “Secular Haze” and it mixes Organs, with heavy guitar riffs and vocals that fit perfectly in-between.

“Year Zero” and “Monstrance Clock” are other tracks you should give some time. I really enjoy the composition of both, these are not just guys that are in it for shock value, they are all very talented at what they do and together it’s a symphony of sorts.

You’re Welcome!
