The Tampa Bay Lightning coming into tonight had won nine of their last ten games. The Bolts current seven game home winning streak is tied with Chicago for the longest active home win streak in the NHL and tonight the Bolts took on the Pittsburgh Penguins.

The puck drops, and just seconds later Pittsburgh’s star Sydney Crosby got a shot on goal. Not a good way to open up the game and just a minute later, Crosby blocked a shot by Jason Garrison, and made a play towards the Lightning end.

Steven Stamkos, picked off the puck and got the first shot on goal for the Lightning.

Chris Kunitz cut off the pass of Andrej Sustr, and got the puck to line mate #72 Patric Hornqvist to score the first goal of the game.

There were a lot of Penguin fans in the house, they erupted in unison, when their team scored.

Pittsburgh continued to put the pressure on in the Lightning zone, and created so many scoring chances. They were playing a wide open game, and the Lightning just weren’t keeping up. The shot count with ten minutes gone in the first period was Pittsburgh 10, Tampa 1.

And with that, just 2 shots on goal for Tampa, Tyler Johnson wraps around behind the Pens net, and centers a pass to Anton Stralman, and he wrists one in.  Tesla coils in the house, 1-1.

After the Lightning goal, a lot of back and forth play by both teams. Then at 18:34 in the first, a Lightning goal, scored by #17Alex Killorn with assist#9 Tyler Johnson, assist to #86 Nikita Kucherov.

The score at the end of the first period was 2-1 Lightning. Shot count, Pittsburgh 12, Tampa 5. Pittsburgh goalie Marc-Andre Fluery had a rough first period.

At 4:26 in the second period, #5 Jason Garrison received a 2 minute minor penalty for slashing putting the Penguins on the power play for the first time of the game.

The Penguins struggled to keep the puck in, and then Stamkos created a turnover at the blue line, push the puck ahead, and Ondrej Palat sped down the ice to score a short handed goal for the Lightning at 6:04 in the second.  It was the first short-handed assist for Stamkos in his career.

The Lightning came alive in the second period, and began to pepper Fleury with several shots.

The Lightning lose the next face-off and the Penguins open things up by scoring their second goal of the game at 8:04. #72 Hornqvist feeds the puck to #87 Sydney Crosby and he lifts one past Ben Bishop to cut the lead to one.  The Lightning lead 3-2.

Just seconds after at 9:15, #9 Tyler Johnson rips one by Penguins netminder Fleury, with assist by Kucherov and Hedman. It was the first power play goal of the game.

Unfortunately for the Pittsburgh netminder, Fleury was pulled at 9:15, he had allowed 4 goals with only 10 shots. Back up netminder #37 Jeff Zatkoff would be tested for the remainder of the game.

The Lightning would now get their penalty kill tested for the second time, as #22 Erik Condra got called for hooking. The Lightning killed off the penalty and play continued.

At 2:51 in the second #7 Matt Cullen got a breakaway but #9 Forward Tyler Johnson did a great job of back checking the puck away!

At 17:41 Nikita Kucherov received a two minute minor hooking penalty to once again put the Penguins on the power play. The Lightning successfully once again killed off the penalty and ended the second period ahead 4-2.

At just 0:55 in the third #7 Matt Cullen scores an even strength goal to put the Penguins at 3. But Coach Cooper challenged the play saying that Pittsburgh was off sides. And so the play was reviewed on a tablet by the linesman on the ice. The call on the ice stands, and the goal was good! The Penguin fans erupted at the Oil Can.

Play resumes with the Penguins getting some really good scoring chances, but Bishop was making some great saves. The Lightning line of Callahan, Filppula and Brown got the puck back down in Pittsburgh zone, and retained possession and made some great plays, with Goalie #37 Jeff Zatkoff shutting them down.

At about 10 minutes in the third #9 Tyler Johnson had a breakaway, but some brilliant defense by the Penguins shut him down.

With just 5 minutes left to play in the game, the crowd erupted in “Let’s Go Bolts, Let’s Go Bolts!” The Penguins fought back, with at least one minute of puck possession. Then the ice shifted, and Tampa moved into Pittsburgh zone. Stamkos put one on goal, Zatkoff gave up a rebound and the heads up play of Ondrej Palat, notched a fifth goal for the Lightning! Palat’s second goal of the game.

The goal was challenged by Pittsburgh coach for goaltender interference, but after review the call on the ice stood. GOAL!!!!!

With Just two minutes left to play, the Penguins pull their goalie to gain a man advantage. Once again, heads up play by Ryan Callahan blocks the pass, feeds the puck to to Stralman and GOAL, empty netter!!

And the Lightning win 6-3. The goal horn sounds, the crowd erupts and my favorite we got to hear “We Salute You.”

The Lightning end the Penguins four game winning streak. The Lightning go on the road to face Ottawa north of the border on Monday night then Montreal.

“I’m gonna sit here and say that was a run and gun game. They are really fast, that’s a fast team.”

“The first 12 or 13 minutes of the first period, that was probably the best team we’ve seen all year.”

They are a tough team to play against, they’re speed, they are on pucks all of the time. We were able to come out on top, that’s a good sign for us.”
