TORONTO BLUE JAYS 3B/OF JOSE BAUTISTA was voted as the HONDA PLAYER OF THE MONTH for August by the TORONTO CHAPTER of the BBWAA. Bautista becomes the first three-time winner in 2010, having earned the honour in May and July.  Honda, the official car of the Blue Jays, will make a donation to the charity of Jose Bautista’s choosing.

BAUTISTA, 29, hit .299 (29-97) in August and led Major League Baseball with  12 home runs and the American League with 24 RBI and 72 total bases.  He also posted an American League best .742 slugging percentage & 1.173 OPS.   The 6-0, 195lb. slugger from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic collected five doubles, a triple and walks 24 times resulting in a .431 on-base percentage.  He is now the first Blue Jay in Club history to hit at least 10 home runs in three separate months in one season.

August marked the third month this season that Bautista has led the Majors in home runs.  He also set the pace in May (12) and July (11).   He currently leads Major League Baseball with 43 home runs this season.  That total ranks as the fourth highest single season total in Club history behind George Bell, who hit 47 HR’s in 1987, Jose Canseco’s 46 in 1998 and Carlos Delgado’s 44 HR’s in 1999.

Also receiving votes from the Toronto Chapter of the BBWAA for their fine performances in August were RHP Brandon Morrow (3-0, 2.97 ERA, 5 starts), RHP Kevin Gregg (1-0, 7 Saves, 2.08 ERA) and LHP Brett Cecil (3-2, 3.67).
