Lightning Strikes Oil, Score 6 Times

By on January 20, 2016

The Lightning earlier this month beat the Oilers in Edmonton, which was the start of their 5 game winning streak they are currently on. It was the first win in Edmonton for this franchise since March 7, 2007 and it marked the start of the hottest streak of the year for the Lightning.

The  Lightning came in winning their last  5 in a row and 6 of their last 7.  The hot streak continued as they score 3:57 in the first period.  #89 Nikita Nesterov ripped one by Oilers net minder Anders Nilsson. The assists to Alex Killorn and Andre Shustr.  Killorn made a nice pass to Nesterov who did not waste it.

Nail Yakupov from the Oilers blocked his own teammate’s shot, and had to be helped off the ice early in the first. (Nail got nailed.)

Play resumes and Stamkos turns the puck over right on the tape of Edmonton’s #26 Iiro Pakarinen and he shoots, Lightning goalie Vasilevskiy stops the shot but gives up a rebound and #44 Zack Kassian cleans up the trash in front of the net and ties the game 1-1.

The Lightning look tired in the first, even though it is Edmonton coming off a road win Monday night in South Florida over the red hot Panthers.  The Bolts  are turning the puck over in the neutral zone and losing the one on one battles in the corners.

Eric Condra decides at 11:14 in the first that it’s time to get physical, and gets a 2 minute minor for cross checking. The Oilers will have a man advantage for the first time in the game and they do a good job on the first 45 seconds of the power play, and almost score, they had Vasilevskiy handcuffed, but luckily the Lightning get it out!

At 16:57 in the first period Victor Hedman manages to move the puck into to Edmonton zone, Alex Killorn passes it over to Tyler Johnson and Nikita Kucherov backhands one by goalie Anders Nilsson to put the Lightning ahead 2-1 sending the crowd into a somewhat frenzy of relief.

At 18:05 in the second, Justin Schultz commits a 2 minute minor for holding, and it’s a Teco Energy Power Play! Unfortunately, Edmonton manages to score a shorthanded goal. Mark Letestu #55, assist by #25 Darnell Nurse.

The first period ends with the shot count 11-11 and the score tied 2-2.

The Lightning come out with a bang in the second period, good puck possession, cycling around in the Oilers zone. Tyler Johnson gets a great scoring chance at about 4:35 but the 2-2 scores still illuminates on the scoreboard.

Just like that, Stamkos and Namestikov break out with a beautiful criss-cross pass to Ondrej Palat who lights the lamp to give the Lightning the lead at 3-2.

At 7:31 in the second Johnson commits a 2 minute minor hooking penalty, and his line-mate Alex Killorn Killorn gets a 2 minute roughing penalty co-incidental with  the Oilers #44 Zack Kassian . Net result an Edmonton  2 minute power play.

The Lightning kill the penalty, and are starting to look alive in this second period. There might be an oil slick at the Amalie Arena.

Captain Steven Stamkos is fightning for the puck against the boards, and trips #44 Zack Kassian at 10:20 in the second. Their penalty killing skills will be tested once again. The Lightning look crisp and are fast to the puck keeping Edmonton at bay on this power play.

Coach Jon Cooper is mixing up the lines, Stamkos, Namestikov and Killorn make up the first line. Filppula, Brown and Callahan the second. The Lightning are cycling the puck around and getting off some great scoring chances late in the second period.

At 17:12 in the second Ondrej Palat wrists one on Anders Nilsson, the puck takes a lucky high bounce and goes in behind him with a little help from Vladislav Namestnikov for a good GOAL!!! The goal goes under review in Toronto because it looks like Namestikov touched the puck with a high stick from behind the net as it bounced behind the Oilers goalie. Namestnikov patiently waited for the puck to get below the crossbar to whack it in.  A hi-light reel goal for years to come.

The Lightning are now in the lead 4-2. It was Namestikovs tenth goal of the season. The crowd is alive at the Oil Can.

With the third period under way at 2:10 the Oilers get on the board with a wrist shot by Leon Drasaitl, the assist to Taylor Hall and Zack Kassian. The score was now 4-3 Lightning.

Edmonton is starting to turn up the heat early in the third and a defensive breakdown by Andre Sustr and Jason Garrison.  #26 Iiro Pakarinen flops a shot at the Lightning goal and it bounces by Vasilevskiy. The score was now tied 4-4.

With the score now tied at 6:02 Eric Condra commits a 2 minute minor high sticking penalty, his second trip to the sin-bin in the game. The Lightning special team was put to the test. With some heads up play #11 Brian Boyle manages to steal the puck and wrist one by Anders Nilsson, who came way out of his crease. It’s a shorthanded goal for Brian Boyle, with assist from #55 Braydon Coburn and #23 J.T. Brown.  Some of the crowd down behind Nilsson start the sarcastic NILLSSSSON chant.  Oh fun at the “Oil Can!”

Some pushing and shoving continues as Edmonton tries to tie the game but the Lighting win the battle as Edmonton pulls their goalie, Killorn with help from Kucherov scores an empty netter. The Lightning win the contest 6-4!

And AC/DC sings “We Salute You.”

Three stars of the game : O . Palat, A. Killorn and Edmonton’s Z. Kassian.

The Lightning will take on the reigning Stanley Cup Champions, The Chicago Blackhawks, Thursday January 21, at the “Oil Can.”  The Blackhawks won in Nashville Tuesday night and are red hot winning 12 in a row.

Story line is going to read Stanley Cup Finals rematch and the two teams with the streak.
