Lin-sanity. Super Lin-tendo. Lin-sane. Whichever nickname you use, it’s almost not enough to describe the sensation that is Jeremy Lin.

For the benefit of those who have been under the proverbial rock, Jeremy Lin is the basketball player who has taken the nation by storm. Since his coming out party last Friday when he went off for 38 points against the Lakers, he introduced himself to Kobe and the world.

Lin has broken many rookie records, including Allen Iverson’s record for most points in first four starts (Lin had 109). However, everything he’s done on the court isn’t the only thing that amazes me.

Lin grew up in Palo Alto, Calif. which is not too far from San Francisco. He played basketball in high school, but instead of going somewhere to play ball, his talents took him to Harvard. Ivy League schools don’t give out athletic scholarships, so Lin made it to Harvard solely based on his academics and walked on to the team.

After balancing his studies and basketball for four years, Lin was picked up by the Golden State Warriors as an undrafted free agent at the beginning of this season. Lin was cut without making a single start, only playing in garbage time.

Lin’s team of destiny became the New York Knicks who were point-guard starved to begin the season. After the poor play of Mike Bibby and Toney Douglas and the continual injuries of Baron Davis, Knicks Coach Mike D’Antoni played Lin off the bench to create an offensive spark. Lin rewarded D’Antoni and scored 25 in a win over the Nets. Lin hasn’t looked back since.

Although he will only make $762,195 this year (compared to $18 million Carmelo Anthony and Amare Stoudemire are due) Lin isn’t just the talk of the town; Lin’s been the best Knick during this stretch. As the starting point-guard of the Knicks, Lin and the Knicks haven’t dropped a game and Lin has played a clutch role, even hitting a “game Lin-ner” against Toronto.

Of anyone that can handle the bright lights of The Garden and NYC, it’s no surprise to me Lin is the guy. A Harvard grad with nothing to lose, Jeremy Lin is proving that he is no fluke: he’s legit.
