THEM!A few weeks ago I was doing my best to fall asleep; insomnia had me for the second straight night and nothing was helping me get any shut eye.  Normally at night I shut my phone off or put it on vibrate, but this night I forgot and when it chimed around midnight I quickly grabbed my phone to see what type of notification was waiting for me. It was a Facebook friends request from an old Army buddy with whom I have not really had any contact with since 1997.

Of course when a pal from the past pops up you want to catch up so we messaged back and forth for a little while, he mentioned his band and how I should give his band a listen. I did, and since that night, I’ve been hooked.  So let me tell you about THEM!

Who is THEM!? THEM! is Vocalist and ring leader Ben Them, Guitarist Matt Shea, Pat Campbell on bass and Aaron Isaacson on Drums. THEM! has been playing around the Detroit area for about a year now and they seem to have a growing fan base.  For all of you that thought Punk was dead, well I’m here to tell you it’s far from dead.   All you need to do is listen to THEM! and you’ll agree, PUNK LIVES!!

THEM! is PUNK, PUNK is THEM! These guys are not shitty musicians striking 3 cords, banging on drums and screaming senseless words, no THEM! is no GREEN DAY, they are what PUNK music is, they are bringing back the Oi!, Oi!, Oi! And I love it.  The hardcore side of punk bleeds deep in THEM! Influenced by bands like Circle Jerks, Black Flag, Sick of it All and Rancid these guys are down to earth, hardworking blue collar average Joes that have a knack for hardcore punk.

Although their CD only has 5 tracks on it, I’ve found myself repeating it over and over to the point that my wife and kids are now hooked on THEM! just as much as I am. Music that hits you in the face and rumbles deep into your bones is always a positive in my book and THEM! does just that. The lyrics, the music and the arrangement are in your face and without remorse. You know…what punk is about.

If you listen to punk, the roots of punk that is, it all had a message and THEM! tries to continue that trend from “Gotta Have More” a song  described by vocalist and lyricist Ben Them, that puts out a positive message about doing everything in moderation and not letting the demons take over your life. The same could be said  about the track “My Friend” which to me is hardcore type of Eulogy that honors the life of a childhood friend.  The song that resonates the most with me is “Working Class”, I can see a movie being made about life and this song playing as I enter a saloon and belly up to the bar, I bet you can relate to it as well, once you listen to it.

The greatness of THEM! continues on with “WDGAF” or “We don’t  give a Fuck” , which to me is a hands in the air, middle fingers extended salute and anthem to all the negative pricks in life. I could be way off, but that’s what I get out of it. The last song on the CD is titled “Because of Me” and it dives into infidelities, hardcore partying and the ill effects is has on relationships. Again and again, track after track THEM! delivers and makes you fall in love with Punk music all over again, THEM! gives you  a reason to rejoice and appreciate Punk in its rawest form, go listen to THEM!, give THEM! a “LIKE” on their Facebook page, share THEM! with your friends, and remember PUNK IS NOT DEAD!!!
