Magic Run Out of Gas in Home Loss to Hawks

Orlando, Fla. — The Orlando Magic struggled again at home on Wednesday night, falling to the Atlanta Hawks by a score of 111-92. The loss saw two of their current hurdles come to life: stringing together wins, and winning at the Amway Center.

After Monday’s game in in Madison Square Garden in which the Magic scored 115 points in a win over the Knicks, the team looked to defend home court against a Hawks team that gave up 131 during their last matchup in Philips Arena.

What happened was the all-too-common flat line of the Magic on both ends of the floor.

“I think in general we were too comfortable,” said Magic coach Frank Vogel, “we didn’t extend enough, we didn’t pressure enough, we didn’t protect the rim enough.”

This lack of defensive execution allowed for six Hawks to score in double figures, including a game-high 18 by point guard Dennis Schroder.

The most deflating points of the night came from former Magic All-Star Dwight Howard midway through the fourth quarter. The three-time Defensive Player of the Year shut the door on Orlando by scoring six points – including two clutch free throws – just as the Magic closed the Hawks’ lead to four points.

The arena was rocking for the return of the villainized center, but the Magic offense was unable to keep pace with a Hawks team that shot over 50 percent through all four quarters.

On the offensive end the Magic were equally ineffective. Their 19 assists barely eclipsed the 17 turnovers, and no player could be relied on as a consistent scorer.

Versatile forward Aaron Gordon set the tone early with 10 points in the first quarter, but he would finish with only 15 as his playing time fluctuated and his shot cooled off. After buoying Orlando’s offense early, he played fewer than four minutes in the second quarter.

“We were down so I played the lineup with Jodie Meeks and Evan Fournier,” said Vogel, “the lineup that absolutely torched Atlanta the last time we played these guys.”

Shooting guard Evan Fournier played his first game after sitting the previous five with an injured heel, scoring 14 points. Though his leg looked uncomfortable at times, he was still able to be effective as both a shooter and a slasher.

Magic point guard Elfrid Payton also saw his return to the starting lineup, as his strong play in New York ended his 20-game stretch of coming off the bench. Payton finished with 15 points, six assists, and four rebounds.

The Magic (16-21) have a tougher task on the horizon, as the streaking Houston Rockets led by MVP contender James Harden will visit the Amway Center on Friday.
