More Drama for Nationals and Bryce Harper

By on December 15, 2014

natsOn Monday, the Washington Nationals and All-Star outfielder Bryce Harper agreed on a two-year deal, avoiding a grievance hearing. The two sides were at odds regarding when the Scott Boras led client was to become arbitration eligible. A grievance hearing was scheduled to take place on Tuesday had they not come to terms on the two-year $7.5 million deal.

The drama continues for Harper in the nations capital. What does this mean for his future?

It wasn’t long ago that we were debating whether the Nats should send Harper back to the minors. The media may have given this more tread than it deserved, however when Jason Bishop, a journalism intern, asked Matt Williams about that exact possibility, the discussion took off. If you ask MASN play-by-play man Bob Carpenter, he’ll tell you that unpaid interns have no business asking questions during press conferences.

“…I have a little bit of a problem with the amateur aspect of this thing.”

Well, I have a problem with a lot of what is going on with the Nationals. It started with the Strasburg shutdown in 2012, and now with Matt Williams (not Davey Johnson) on board as manager, the saga continues. Comments about the lineup, trade rumors, dedication, or contract status, have surrounded Bryce Harper and Matt Williams, all in just one year together.

With so much drama in DC, General Manager and President of Baseball Operations, Mike Rizzo may soon be deciding between Matt Williams or Bryce Harper. Time will tell if the player-manager relationship will flourish or fail. Trading Harper in his prime, may provide the club with the best possible return.
