The first week of the NBA Free Agency period has come and gone.  It was a week that not only started with a bang but also ended with a bang.  Over $1 BILLION DOLLARS was awarded to Free Agents on just the first day of Free Agency!  And as in every Free Agency period, there are winners and losers.

The Winners:

San Antonio Spurs:  As the clock begins to wind down on the Golden Age of the Spurs, the signing of LaMarcus Aldridge and David West along with the resigning of Danny Green and Kawhi Leonard shows the Spurs are not just serious about the present but also the future.

LeBron James: The King got owner Dan Gilbert to commit $240 million to 3 players (Kevin Love, Tristan Thompson and Iman Shumpert).  The King is not done yet as he is trying to get the Cavs to trade for Joe Johnson of the Brooklyn Nets.  Oh yeah, the Cavs still have not resigned the King who is going to make sure that Gilbert makes him the highest paid player on the team.

Dwayne Wade: Wade just wanted to get paid.  He wanted to be paid what he felt he was worth.  He wanted to be rewarded for being a team player all those years and taking less money to sign other high price free agents.  Wade got his wish…1 year at $20 million.

The Losers:

New York Knicks and Los Angeles Lakers: The two biggest markets in the NBA failed to attract any of the prized free agents.  Both teams had cap space and history on their side.  Unfortunately for the Knicks and Lakers, todays free agents don’t care about history.  They care about winning and neither the Knicks nor the Lakers are anywhere close to winning.

DeAndre Jordan:  Did Jordan have 2nd thoughts about leaving his comfort zone and the Clippers or as Mavericks Small Forward Chandler Parsons stated: “He wasn’t ready to be a franchise player.  He was scared.”  Whatever the reason for the about face by Jordan, he left a Mavericks team and fan base that was riding high and talking of championships a few days ago to now asking questions about the future of the Mavericks.  Jordan disrespected the Mavericks and proved that he does not have the maturity level to be considered one of the top big men in the league.
