What?  There’s lock-out?  Would not have known it in Lindsay Ontario last night where the Lefroy Wave opened their season against the Bobcaygeon Bucks.

The Wave did not fare well on the scoreboard losing 5-2 but Tampa’s Connor Eckhardt in his first ever Junior A Tier II game netted an assist.

Eckhardt arrived in Ontario literally only 24 hours before the contest joining his new team for the first time.  It did not take him long to get on the score sheet.  With just 6:56 in, with the scored tied 1-1,  Eckhardt set up the Wave’s first lead of the season as he beautifully set up a pass to Nikolay Savitiskiy who was able to get the puck to Josh Stanclift to beat Bobcaygeon goalie Chris Tezis.

For the first time back on the ice together since at the World Hockey Center in summer camp a couple years ago,  Connor and his friend goalie Daniel Rocha played together.  Eckhardt said, “It was good to get back on the ice together.  Weird we are on the same team.  I also have the same feeling playing with Dexter (Lamarche).  He was a camp with us too.”  “It was amazing!” Rocha said. “Old feelings came back,  I never thought would happen.”

Eckhardt said,  “I was so into the game I did not hear the announcement on the goal. I did not realize I was credited with an assist until after the  game. At first I was shocked and then pretty happy.”

Rocha also had inked the score sheet notching the number three star with a 42 save performance facing 47 shots.  The Bucks on their first shot just :38 in.  “It was pretty disappointing they scored on their first shot.  I like to stop the first one to settle down.  Then I just settled down and I thought, it was better to get it out of the way and then everything just fell into place.”

Rocha’s counterpart, Chris Tezis,  was the number one star 43 saves and Bobcaygeon  forward Glen Patterson scored a hat trick.

The Lefroy Wave travel to Orangeville to take on the Americans.
