RAYS AGREE TO ONE-YEAR CONTRACT WITH SONNANSTINE

ST. PETERSBURG, FL—The Tampa Bay Rays have agreed to a one-year contract with pitcher Andy Sonnanstine, avoiding arbitration.

Sonnanstine, 27, will earn $912,500. In 2010, the righthander spent the majority of the season in the Rays bullpen and made 37 relief appearances and four starts. He went 3-1 with a 4.44 ERA (81-IP, 40-ER) and led the Rays bullpen with 63 relief innings pitched. He ranked fourth in the major leagues with 15 relief appearances of at least two innings and third with six outings of at least three innings.

Sonnanstine has spent parts of the last four seasons with the Rays (2007-10) and won 13 games in 2008.
