Rockem Sockem Game 1 goes to Tampa

By on April 14, 2016

The Tampa Bay Lightning and the Detroit Red Wings meet for the second consecutive year in round one of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.  Last year the Lightning came back to win the series in seven after losing game one at the “Oil Can.”  This year would be a different start for Tampa.

A game that featured 18 minor penalties, eight of which were roughing and two were charging,  where the Tampa Bay Lightning opened the scoring at 6:23 in the first period, Nikita Kucherov lit the lamp and brought the thundering crowd to their feet. The assist to Tyler Johnson and Alex Killorn. Prior to the Lightning goal , the Red Wings were possessing the puck and controlling the majority of the game.

The shot count at the end of the first period was Detroit 14, Tampa 8. The score Tampa 1, Detroit 0. The Red Wings put up more shots, but Ben Bishop was ready for them.

The Detroit Red Wings came out swinging in the second period, and scored their first goal of the series at 2:11. The goal was scored by Mike Green, he ripped a slap shot in front of JT Brown who got a piece of it but the puck bounced high and went in. The assist to Danny DeKeyser and Tomas Tatar. Just two minutes later the Red and White team struck again when Justin Abdelkader tipped in a shot from Kyle Quincey, to put the Wings ahead 2-1.

That Red Wings goal helped turn up the heat, and both teams started to hit, push, shove and fight.  The competitive nature came out on both sides multiple penalties were handed out. At 6:34 in the second Jonathan Drouin got a two minute minor slashing penalty to put the Red Wings on the power play.

The Lightning were fighting hard to come back and at 9:29 Nikita Kucherov lit the lamp to notch his second goal of the game. With the score tied at 2, things got really heated. There was a huge scrum in front of Jimmy Howard at 11:42, and a total of 12 minutes worth of penalties were handed out. Dylan Larkin, Danny DeKeyser and Darren Helm of the Red Wings each got a roughing penalty. Brayden Coburn got four minutes for roughing and Alex Killorn got an interference penalty. The second period ended with the score tied at 2 and both teams pretty rowled up.

The third period opened up kind of tame compared to the previous two periods. It looked like the Lightning would strike first with a goal by Victor Hedman, that was quickly under review by the men in black and white stripes. The determination was off sides and the goal did not count. The crowd was not pleased as the “Oil Can” turned upside down.

Moments later the jeers turned to cheers as Alex Killorn at 8:52 scored the eventual game winner.   Tyler Johnson rifled one towards the Detroit goal and Killorn deflected the puck past Jimmy Howard.

There was another 11:08 of rockem sockem hockey and the Lightning held one to grab the all important game one.

To be continued, Friday 7:00pm at the “Oil Can!”
