Spongers Continue Ground Attack

By on September 9, 2012

Clearwater, Fla. – Louie Zervos gave the Spongers a 3-0 lead in the first quarter on a perfect 30 yard field goal and they never looked back. The Spongers picked up right where they left off the week before in Dunedin pounding the football on the ground. The ground assault of Kenyatta Merriex, Montel Johnson, Michael Ford, Dylan Bronstrop and QB Dalton Collins averaged 7.8 yards per carry (43 carries, 335 yards) and 3 TD’s.

The first TD was in the first quarter following the Zervos FG when Kenyatta Merriex took the pigskin in from the one.

In the second quarter the home team Clearwater Tornadoes inked a field goal of their own when Joel Tunceren booted a 35 yarder.

In the third quarter the Tornadoes cut the lead to one point when QB Devijion Smith hooked up with speedster Adam Harris for a 73 yard pitch and catch. In the attempt to tie, the PAT was blocked allowing the Spongers to maintain the slim one point lead.

Then still in third the offensive line was just offense for the Spongers opening up large holes. The Spongers lead grew to 15 after a 21 yard TD by Montel Johnson and another by QB Dalton Collins (31 yards) and two Zervos PAT’s.

With a 24-9 lead, the Sponger defense got into the act with a late third quarter safety to push the lead to 26-9.

In the 4th quarter with the Tornadoes driving and moving the ball #26 Patrick Miller the Spongers’ strong outside linebacker rushed Tornadoes QB Smith as he started to run. Smith made the mistake of popping the ball up in the air and Miller snatched it and scooted 52 yards…exclamation point for the Spongers.  Smith who was visibly upset after the play was consoled and coached up by Donnie Abraham.  Abraham is the heir apparent to celebrated Head Coach  Tom Bostic as Abraham will take over in 2013.

Whatever Abraham said to Smith it worked.  Smith did not keep his head down for the Tornadoes and he engineered a nice drive ending with a 29 yard TD strike to Adam Harris.  Smith and Harris were not done as the duo hooked up on the two-point conversion posted the 33-17 which was the eventual final.

Dalton Collins was named Rocket Sports & Entertainment Network Sponger of the game for his leadership of the offense and outstanding rushing performance.

Harris and Smith were definitive stand-outs for the Clearwater Tornadoes.

Rocket Sports & Entertainment Network would like to extend a special thank you to Clearwater High School, Principal Keith Mastorides and his staff for the gracious hospitality.
