Star Mazda Series to become Pro Mazda Championship

Dec.7th, 2012 – Indy Car, the sanctioning body for the Mazda Road to Indy development series, and Anderson promotions announced today that the Star Mazda Championship Series will run as the Pro Mazda Championship Series in 2013. Dan Anderson, owner of Anderson Promotions has purchased the series from previous series owner Gary Rodrigues, and will administer the series throughout the 2013 season.

Anderson now owns and operates the Cooper Tire USF2000 Series, which is another important step in the developmental series for aspiring teams, and drivers working their way up to the pinnacle of open wheeled racing in America, the Izod Indy Car Series. Jason Penix, the director of Grassroots Initiatives for Indy Car Stated,” Everyone with Indy Car is very pleased about Mr. Anderson and his team taking over the new Pro Mazda Championship Series, Mr. Anderson and everyone involved with Anderson Promotions has a proven track record as a leader in junior formula racing in the United States, all you need to do is look at the Cooper Tires USF2000 Series.”

John Doonan, the Director of Mazda Motorsports, Mazda North American Operations released this statement concerning the newly named series. “Dan and his family-run organization are former Star Mazda Team owners and have done an exceptional job in promoting, and developing the Cooper Tire USF2000 Series. They are the ideal team to further advance the series.”

Former series owner Gary Rodrigues and his family have worked with the Star Mazda Series for over two decades, and of course is sadden that he was not able to secure the needed funding to continue the series.  New owner Dan Anderson said, “I want to Thank Gary and his entire family for all the hard work they put into this series over the years, I would also like to Thank Indy Car, and Mazda for their help in working this deal out quickly so the series will continue to operate at the high level it has been in the past.”

An announcement from Anderson is expected soon to reveal the full 2013 schedule. Tim Ramsberger, General Manager, and VP of the Honda Grand Prix of Saint Petersburg, has confirmed the Pro Mazda Series will be on the streets of Saint Petersburg in support of the Izod Indy Car Series for the season opening Honda Grand Prix of Saint Petersburg.
