Took OT but Rangers Spoil Undefeated Party

By on November 3, 2017

Tampa, Fla. — The New York Rangers off to a slow start this season notching only 10 points in 13 games coming into Amaile Arena tonight while the Tampa Bay Lightning, undefeated at home, are off to the best start in franchise history with 21 points in 13 games.  It’s the 25 anniversary year of the Lightning franchise and it’s been quite a silver anniversary party.   The Rangers did not get the memo.

The Lightning are currently the best scoring team in the league at 53 goals and have been the talk among many NHL talk banter.  Again, the Rangers did not get the memo.

At about 15 minutes in to the first period Rangers Kevin Shattenkirk had a breakaway scoring chance, only to be utterly and completely stoned by Andrei Vasilevskiy.  In a bizarre twist at the Lightning end just behind Vasilveskiy at 2:23 in the first Mats Zuccarello slashed Victor Hedman and the tall defense-man retaliated only to get thrown down on the ice.  Both resulted in a penalty, Zuccarello for slashing and Hedman for roughing.  With the co-incidental minor ticking on the clock, the Lightning gave up the first goal of the night to the Rangers at 18:34.  Chris Kreider would notch his 4th goal of the season, with the assist from Mika Zibanejad and Brady Skjei.

The Lightning being held to only 14 shots on goal halfway through the second period, resulted in a standoff along the boards between the two teams.  Tyler Johnson and Ryan Callahan worked the puck for the Lightning as Steven Kampfer tried to dig it out for the Rangers.  It ended in a square off between Callahan and Kampfer who each received major penalties for fighting.

The pushing and shoving continued and at 10:01 Vlad Namestnikov received a two minute cross checking penalty to put the Rangers on the man advantage.  This set the stage for Brayden Point who jabbed the puck free from the Rangers then Yanni Gourde and Victor Hedman dazzle the crowd for a text book short handed goal!  The score was tied 1-1, and the crowd was electric.

At 3:41 in the third J.T. Brown won the draw, Jake Dotchin caught the puck and backwards passed it to Alex Killorn, who rifled one past Henrik Lundqvist.  As quickly as the goal horn sounded, it stopped.  The goal was waived off for goal tender interference.  #40 Gabriel Dumont was standing inside the crease during the goal, the call was challenged by Coach Jon Cooper but the call stood.  NO GOAL!  There clearly was no contact with the goalie, but who am I to argue with an NHL official.

69.1 Interference on the Goalkeeper – This rule is based on the premise that an attacking player’s position, whether inside or outside the crease, should not, by itself, determine whether a goal should be SECTION 9 – OTHER FOULS NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE OFFICIAL RULES 2017-2018 95 allowed or disallowed. In other words, goals scored while attacking players are standing in the crease may, in appropriate circumstances be allowed. Goals should be disallowed only if: (1) an attacking player, either by his positioning or by contact, impairs the goalkeeper’s ability to move freely within his crease or defend his goal; or (2) an attacking player initiates intentional or deliberate contact with a goalkeeper, inside or outside of his goal crease. Incidental contact with a goalkeeper will be permitted, and resulting goals allowed, when such contact is initiated outside of the goal crease, provided the attacking player has made a reasonable effort to avoid such contact. The rule will be enforced exclusively in accordance with the on-ice judgement of the Referee(s), but may be subject to a Coach’s Challenge (see Rule 78.7).

Things heated up as J.T. Brown slashed Steven Kempfer that resulted in a fighting major for both players.  J.T. Brown received an additional two minutes for slashing.  This would put the Rangers on a two minute man advantage to no avail as the Bolts killed it off.  Ryan McDonagh received a roughing penalty and returned the favor as Tampa went on the man advantage at 5:04 in the third to set the stage for home team late game heroics.  But no, the score remained tied at 1-1 at the end of three periods.

The Rangers had a total of 34 shots, the Lightning 28.    A tie, each team receiving a point and moving on to overtime for the additional point.  Tonight some excellent goal-tending was on display. At opposite ends of the ice stood Andrei “the Wall” Vasilevskiy against Henrik “the King” Lundqvist and a 1-1 tie at the end of regulation showcased the goalies with 60 saves.

Rangers J.T. Miller ends the undefeated party just 1:19 into the extra hockey wit a top shelfer.

The Bolts take to the ice at home on Saturday night 7:30 p.m. to take on the Columbus Blue Jackets.
