Toronto’s Opening Day Rotation and Closer Announced

By on March 23, 2011

DUNEDIN, Fl. (RSEN)–The son of 1982 NL CY Young winner Doug Drabek RHP Kyle Drabek, will make the trip north with the Toronto Blue Jays as their number two starter.

It wasn’t exactly the way he had wanted it because of an injury to RHP Brandon Morrow (flexor muscle right forearm)

“I feel good,” said Drabek of breaking camp with the big club, “I’ll take it.  It’s something I have been trying to do since spring training started.”

Drabek said, “I hadn’t reached my father yet and my mother hasn’t picked up the phone.”

Involved in the off season trade in 2009 that saw RHP Roy Halladay move to the Phillies, Drabek was the “Pitcher of the Year” in the Double-A Eastern League in 2010.

Also announced by Toronto GM Alex Anthopoulos on Wednesday was that the rotation will be LHP Ricky Romero followed by Drabek second, LHP Brett Cecil third, LHP Jo Jo Reyes fourth and RHP Jesse Litsch fifth.

Anthopoulos stated the RHP Jon Rauch will be the team’s closer.  Rauch is the tallest player in major league history at 6’ 11” and should be intimidating on the mound.

“He feels good and if it was during the season he would pitch, it’s only one start” said Anthopoulous of Morrow.  “He had an MRI and showed a forearm strain so he won’t throw for five days.  Then he will do long toss, a bullpen session then get into a game, possibly down here.”

Morrow, originally slated as the number two starter is a bit more optimistic about his situation.

“They are playing it safe,” said Morrow, “It feels fine right now, it doesn’t bother me at all.”

Morrow will probably join fellow pitchers Frank Fransico and Jesse Carlson on the DL to start the season.

As to his 2B Aaron Hill (right quad muscle) Anthopoulos said, “We’re just continuing to watch him as he isn’t 100-percent.

The only Toronto player officially on the DL is RHP Dustin McGowan who is on the 60-day DL.
