Torts and Jackets Crash Party

By on January 14, 2017

Tampa, Fla. — Stage set, lights, camera, action:  Prior to puck drop earlier this evening the Tampa Bay Lightning retired Martin St. Louis’ No. 26. He is the first Bolt to have his number retired in franchise history and there wasn’t a dry eye in the building as Marty spoke about his late mother. He said “she used to sit in the Chase Club, and she knew he scored when she heard the song Louie Louie.”

The Bolts will forever have No. 26 watching over them, as it now hangs in the rafters at the Amalie Arena.

Tonight was the final match of this season for the Tampa Bay Lightning and the team that hales from the Buckeye state Columbus Blue Jackets. To add to the ceremonious evening the Blue Jackets are coached by former Tampa Bay Lightning head coach, John Tortorella. In  2004 Tortorella led the Lightning to a Stanley Cup Championship.

The Jackets have won both games against the Lightning and the Lightning are currently sitting at twelfth place in the East, the Jackets number two behind the Capitals.

Stage set, lights, camera, action:

The Bolts came out swinging almost literally. The Lightning had many incredible scoring chances in the first period, and at 16:18 Jonathan Drouin made the Jackets pay with a wrister. Valtteri Filppula and Ondrej Palat helped him out. The Lightning start out with a 1-0 lead on this historic night.  That 1 would be all they would get.

Alex Killorn squared off with Josh Anderson close to the end of the first period, They both received fighting majors, but Anderson got an additional two minutes for roughing. And Anderson also got the best of Killorn.

At the end of the first shot counts were Bolts 19, Jackets 6.

Second period was a lot of the same with the Bolts dominating the puck possession and battles in the corners. They had multiple scoring opportunities but newcomer netminder Joonas Korpisalo was doing a great job of blocking them.

Now it was Josh Anderson’s to get the best of the Lightning, At 16:40 the Bolts turned the puck over as they were exiting the zone and he scored a flukey bouncing goal to tie the score 1-1.

The Blue Jackets came to life in the third period, challenging the Lightning defense, and goal tender Andrei Vasilevskiy. Nick Foligno got the go ahead goal at just 4:29. Tyler Johnson received a hooking minor to put the Blue Jackets on the man advantage, and the went ahead 2-1.  It was the only power play goal the Blue Jackets scored in four attempts.  The Lightning were a woeful 0-3.

With the score 2-1 with plenty of ticks left on the clock, the Lightning were still in this after giving up a one goal lead.

And then… with the clock winding down and Tampa on a power play after Jack Johnson went to the box for slashing, Boone Jenner, who Rocket thinks would be a great NASCAR name, closes the door with a shorty into an empty net.  3-1 Blue Jackets with just 65 ticks left.

Maybe the Rocket has something on these distracting ceremony games.  And a question… How often did the Lightning go 0-3 on the power play with #26 in the line-up?   Just wondering…

Go west young skaters… a six game road trip; Los Angeles, Anaheim, San Jose, Arizona, Chicago, Florida and then home for Boston not until January 31st.

Listen to the Rocket Sports & Entertainment Network Show Mondays at 1pm EST.
