Unable to Spoil Boucher Homecoming

By on February 2, 2017

Tampa, Fla. — You know I would dislike to use the old “must win game” cliche as early as Ground Hog Day, but due to the Tampa Bay Lightning’s, well how do I say it, standings free fall… every game from here on out, is you know, that cliche.  Not only that as a story line, but tonight was a homecoming of sorts.  First year Senators head coach Guy Boucher returns to the arena formerly called the Tampa Bay Times Forum.  It was the first time since Boucher’s unceremonious departure from the Lightning before the halfway point in the 2012-13 season.  Boucher was coaching tonight back in barn where it all started at the NHL level for him.

In the first the Senators seemed to have the extra step by controlling and breaking swiftly through the neutral zone. But the overall consensus of the first twenty minutes was, it was a real paint drier with Ottawa holding a 7-5 shot advantage.

Tyler Johnson gave the Lightning an all important one goal lead just under four minutes into the second and a collective groundhog’s sigh of relief was felt as the crowd erupted in a playoff form frenzy.

It was not long, less than three minutes later, the Sens stoned the Lightning led and tied the score.  Mark Stone from close in sneaks one past Andrei Vasilevskiy.  Zach Smith fed a nice pass from behind the goal to Stone who did waste it. Tied at 1.

With Braydon Coburn in the sinbin for interference, Kyle Turris ripped it glove side high to give the Sens their first led of the night with 9:57 left in the second.   The power play helpers on Turris 18th goal of the season went to Mike Hoffman and Erik Karlsson.  It was a lead the Senators would not relinquish and another two points slips away.  For Karlsson he would notch a later assist on Mark Stone’s second goal of the game in the third period, an assist that pushed Karlsson into third place on the NHL’s assist leaderboard.  Karlsson padded another assist on the nightcap empty-netter by Chris Kelly.

Ottawa strikes on another man advantage early in the third to go up 3-1 when Mike Hoffman scored assisted by usual suspects, Kyle Turris and Mike Stone.  The Senators up 3-1.  But you know that two goal lead in hockey.

At 7:46 of the third, on point, Brayden Point scores and there in hope in the “Oil Can!”

But reminiscent of Tuesday vs. Boston, down one would be as close as the Lightning would get as Mark Stone finishes a beautiful deflection of a Karlsson shot heading four feet wide and the Sens go up 4-2.  Chris Kelly adds the empty one and Guy Boucher’s Senators take two points and homecoming pride.

The Lightning host the So. Cal teams back to back, the Ducks Saturday and the Kings Tuesday.
