Selmon family & at least 22 members of original team to be honored

TAMPA, FLA. – USF will utilize the 20th homecoming football game Saturday to recognize the 20th anniversary of the football program, which first took the field in 1997. On-field ceremonies will include at least 22 members of the Bulls’ inaugural football team and family members of the late Lee Roy Selmon.

Prior to the Bulls’ (4-1; 1-0 AAC) noon kickoff vs. ECU (2-3; 0-1 AAC) at Raymond James Stadium, members of the Selmon family, including Lee Roy’s widow Claybra, will serve as honorary captains and join the Bulls’ captains at midfield for the coin toss.

Selmon, a college and pro football Hall of Famer and beloved icon in the Bay Area, served as USF Director of Athletics from 2001-2004 and was a key figure in the USF Athletics Department from 1993-2011, playing an instrumental part in launching the USF football program and laying the groundwork for its future success. Claybra remains active with USF Athletics and plays a key role in the Selmon Mentoring Institute, a specialized program that helps prepare USF student-athletes for professional life after graduation.

USF will recognize at least 22 members of the Bulls’ first team on the field during the break between the first and second quarter. USF played its first football game on Sept. 6, 1997, posting an 80-3 rout of Kentucky Wesleyan at Tampa Stadium. The Bulls would play three years at the FCS level before moving to FBS football in 2000.

Among the players being recognized on Saturday will be Ivan Alicot, one of the Bulls’ first team captains and an I-AA All-Independent Team selection on the offensive line. Other I-AA All-Independent Team honorees set to attend Saturday include Tony Umholtz (P) and Joe Sipp (OL). The Bulls’ first starting quarterback, Chad Barnhardt, will also be in attendance.
