It was a matchup of the West Coast vs. the East Coast Thanksgiving Eve by the Bay. This was the first of two meetings between the LA Kings and the Tampa Bay Lightning for the 2015-16 season. The Kings came into to town with a record of 13-8-0 and 26 points.  For the Kings this would be the last of a five game East Coast roadie which started November 17th in Philadelphia with a 3-2 shootout win over the Flyers.

The Tampa Bay Lightning is in the middle of a seven game home stand wrapped around a quick Black Friday trip to DC, with the last two games notching them 2 points each.

Saturday night the Bolts shut out the West Coast Anaheim Ducks 5-0. Ben Bishop kept the young Lightning team in the game, with his first shut out of the season against the Ducks. It was also his Birthday.

Young Joel Vermin was a healthy scratch against the Kings with the Lightning having Tyler Johnson back on the ice. And it would be Johnson that finally gets the party started with a goal in the third and Vatteri Filppula finished it.  Filppula said, “A tough team (Kings) to play against… He’s (Jonathan Quick) tough, it’s tough to find holes.”

At the end of the first period, the score was 0-0 with the Lightning out shooting the Kings 11 to 8. Strong start for Tampa with face off wins at 67%. Valterri Flippula leading the way!

A sold out crowd at the “Oil Can,” was treated to exciting play after the end of a scoreless second period, goaltending! Ben Bishop stopped 19 shots, and Jonathan Quick 21 through two periods.

The Kings did turn up the heat a little in the second, with five more shots on goal than the Lightning. Coach Jon Cooper mixed up the lines a little in the second period, trying to create more scoring chances for the Lightning.

The crowd is still engaged, singing along with the pipe organ during second intermission. “Sweet Caroline,” regardless of the 0-0 score. Thank you Krystof Srebrakowski, for sharing your passion with the fans of Tampa Bay!

With almost five minutes gone in the third period, the score remains 0-0. It’s reminiscent of the game the Bolts played in the windy city last month on October 24th in which the Blackhawks won 1-0 in OT.

Well, almost at 5:57 in the third the goal horn sounds and #9 Tyler Johnson lights the lamp. “Go Johnnie Go,” to put the Lightning in the lead at 1-0. The Kings net minder Jonathan wasn’t “Quick” enough! Assist to #42 Jonathan Marchessault.

The Kings turn up the offensive heat, and manage to up the ante on the shot count. The Kings take some chances, and it pays off at 14:37 with Los Angeles forward #17 Milan Lucic answers with a goal.

At the end of regulation, the score is tied 1-1. It’s time for some 3 on 3 hockey! It’s Captain Steven Stamkos, Tyler Johnson and Victor Hedman on the ice first. The Lightning win the face off, but turn the puck over in the neutral zone. It’s quite a display of NHL talent, but neither team is able to capitalize on the open ice.

Both teams have earned what Rick calls a participation point, and now to decide who gets an extra point we move to a shootout! These goaltenders are earning their stripes tonight.

First up for the Kings it’s Jeff Carter no goal.  Jonathan Marchessault for the Bolts goal! Anze Kopitar with a Kings goal. Then Bolts Nikita Kucherov no goal and for the Kings Tyler Toffoli no goal….and the Finnish Valtteri Filppula roofs the game winner!  Jonathan Quick looked  mesmerized.  Quick fell on his face as he desperately tried to reach around his back to stop the roof shot.

The Tampa Bay Lightning earn the extra point, and win the contest. They will meet the West coast L.A. Kings again on December 5th, in Los Angeles at the Staples Center.

Happy Thanksgiving !
