WAC Preview

The WAC has been pumping out some solid teams over the past few years and Boise State leads the way. However, they will be leaving the conference next year to challenge for the Mountain West Title, so that leaves Nevada and Fresno to battle it out over the next few years, in what should be an interesting battle to view.

Boise St. Broncos

The Blue Turf must hypnotize the opposing teams, toting an impressive home winning streak of 56 straight during the regular season. The Broncos’ QB Kellen Moore, returns to lead his high-powered offense to yet another WAC title. When I say high-powered, I mean high-powered! Boise State was first in the nation averaging 42.2 points per game. They return 10 starters from each side, so I don’t think there will be much changing this year. They want to go out with a bang.

The Wolf Pack Averaged 38.2 points per game last season; good enough for 6th in the country. With a strong, solid offense, they only have to worry about the defense. Nevada will have 6 starters returning on the defensive side that allowed 409.3 yards per game. The Wolf Pack will have to wait another year to have a chance at the top spot, so they should spend this year focusing on the defense.

Fresno St. Bulldogs

Even with the loss of Ryan Mathews, the Bulldogs still have a chance to make some waves in the WAC. They will have the pleasure of having all 5 of their starting offensive linemen returning to protect Ryan Colburn. The glaring weakness is at the Running Back position, but that was to be expected when you just lost the nation’s leading rusher. The wide receivers will all be starting for the 1^st time. Fresno lost all 4 wide receivers to graduation last year, but freshman Victor Dean will be glad to lend a helping hand, standing at 6’6” and 205 pounds, he will be a BIG target for Colburn.

Louisana Tech Bulldogs

The only major loss for the Bulldogs was Running Back Daniel Porter, but the next starter will have all 5 of the starters from last year’s squad opening holes for him. Coaches are still unsure of who will be throwing the ball, which may lead to some early season losses, but they should balance things out and try to end up with a productive season.

Utah St. Aggies

Well, I really want to start off with a prediction here: Al Davis may be spending a lot of time watching tape of the Aggies. “Why,” you ask? Because the Wide Receiver duo of Dontrel Watkins and Xaxier Martin has just what Al loves…. SPEED! Watkins ran a 4.25 in his 40-yard dash, and Martin was not far behind at 4.33. Defense is the question. They gave up a lot of big plays last year and need to focus on the pass rush.

Although they could pull off a surprise, I just can’t see it happening. They’ve lost 4 of their starters off the offensive line, so that will add to the pressure that’s on QB Nathen Enderle. Their defense gave up 36 points a game. They should just be lucky they are in the same conference as New Mexico and San Jose State.

When your team is only able to average 11.5 points a game, you need help all over the Offense. They have no place to go but up. They were last in the nation in scoring and total offense. Seth Smith is an impressive running back; he walked on last year and started by week 2 and ended up rushing for over 1,000 yards. And when your Running Back has more yards rushing than your QB did passing, you know something is not right.

San Jose St. Spartans

Having a new coach, a new system and a young core, it sounds like a perfect time to call this a “REBUILDING” year. Marquis Avery will be a guy to watch for. He is a 6’4”, 210-pound Wide Receiver, that found the end zone 6 times and caught only 46 passes. This could be his break-out year.
