Wathan Returns to Manage Threshers

By on November 23, 2010

The Phillies announced Monday that Dusty Wathan will return for his second season as the Threshers manager in 2011.

Wathan will be joined by returning staff members Dave Lundquist (pitching coach) and Ichiro Kitano (athletic trainer) while the hitting coach is to be announced.

Wathan has spent the last five years in the Phillies’ minor league system as both a player (2006-07) and manager.  Wathan began his managerial career in 2008 with Williamsport where he guided the Crosscutters to a 38-37 mark.  The following season, he led Lakewood to the 2009 South Atlantic League title after the BlueClaws posted a 78-58 regular season record.  Last season with Dusty at the helm, the Threshers posted a 67-72 record.

Lundquist is back for his third year in Clearwater and fourth overall in the Phillies organization. He spent his first three seasons as a minor league coach in the Pittsburgh Pirates’ minor league system. The former Major League pitcher spent his first year with the Phillies at Lakewood in 2008.

Kitano returns for his fourth season in Clearwater and seventh in the Phillies organization.  He spent 2007 with Lakewood, 2006 with Batavia, and 2005 with the Gulf Coast Phillies.

Kevin Jordan, who handled hitting coach duties for the last three seasons in Clearwater, moves to the GCL Phillies.

The Threshers 2011 home opener is Friday, April 8th versus the Dunedin Blue Jays.  The first fireworks show of the year will follow that contest.
