The aptly named “Take Back Your Life” Tour from Disturbed has had some great guests on the bill, and for the Tampa, FL leg, Breaking Benjamin joined in with limited announcement.
Keith Wallen also From Breaking Benjamin, took the place of Jinjer in the opening slot, as they were across the pond playing at the annual Wacken festival.
With heavy heat and humidity, and a near-capacity crowd at the Mid Florida Credit Union Amphitheatre, people were doing everything they could to stay hydrated and cool.
Photo-Jordan RaiffPhoto-Jordan Raiff
Joining Wallen on stage from Breaking Benjamin was Shaun Foist on drums, along with a touring guitarist and bassist. With an already packed amphitheater, the crowd didn’t initially pop for him as loudly as expected. However, by the second song, he was getting people to interact back and forth, and he was loosening into his stride at that point.
Photo-Jordan RaiffPhoto-Jordan Raiff
As Wallen’s brand of mellow rock wafted in the hot August humidity during a short set, gaggles of VIP patrons made their way to the front of the fenced-off pit, and to up-front padded chairs. With clear bags filled with VIP merch, and men carrying their wife’s fanny packs like bandoliers of ammo, it was a great hint for the mixed-ages crowd that would pack Mid Florida. Talking about chasing your dreams, Wallen reminded people to never stop chasing them, because when they do, they will never come true.
Breaking Benjamin took to the stage next. With a white-out curtain hung, the band loaded in behind it and teased the audience with a single note. Opening with “Failure” the band was suddenly revealed as the curtain dropped and was whisked off to the side. With phones out, the crowd sang along, and damn near drown out lead guitarist and singer Benjamin Burnley.
Photo-Jordan RaiffPhoto-Jordan Raiff
During “Breath” the guitar picks started flying out across the audience. This theme continued through the entire set. As the pit was showered in these bits of plastic, the crowd firmly took over for Burnley. While he was singing and you could hear it in the pit, even halfway back on the floor, and the crowd was simply drowning him out. They truly loved being there. The energy for the band firmly matched the attendance at this point, and the audience was the powerhouse tonight.
Photo-Jordan RaiffPhoto-Jordan Raiff
The rest of their 13-total song set was chock full of singalongs to songs like “Until The End”, “Polyamorous”, “So Cold,” and ending with “The Diary of Jane.” While a predictable set, it was damn good. Especially after 20 years of playing, the band has seen some serious ups and downs, but their ability to draw and entertain a crowd is beyond contestation.
Photo-Jordan RaiffPhoto-Jordan Raiff
Let’s start this off by making something crystal clear. The photos here do not to the pyrotechnics of Disturbed justice. No matter if it was because of liability, or something else, the fire seen in these photos from the pit is child’s play compared to the full show. As of this point, hands down the best pyro of any tour in 2023 thus far.
Photo-Jordan Raiff
Much like Breaking Benjamin, Disturbed elected to use the drop curtain as well. However, they didn’t tease their presence with single notes. Instead, they posed and used backlights to allow their shadow to project. Larger than life shadow. Thanks to some terrific posing, they had the crowd in a rabid mood before the notes to “Hey You” rolled across the smokey and fiery darkness.
Photo-Jordan RaiffPhoto-Jordan Raiff
Decked out in a flowing sweater over a sleeveless t-shirt and jeans, in all black, David Draiman took command of the stage. With how he commanded the crowd one fan remarked “The choice of wardrobe of the singer was rather quirky, he looked more like a priest than a rock/metal singer…(By the) third song, he lost the priest cloak. He asked for fists, he got fists,” all night long!! Given Draiman’s background and upbringing, this was a unique choice to describe him, but not an unfitting one.
Photo-Jordan RaiffPhoto-Jordan Raiff
However, much like a priest, the fans who came out for Disturbed got more than they likely expected. While the band is known for their marathon sets, they covered 17 tracks and a three-song encore. For “A Reason to Fight”, Draiman took a moment to share his suicide prevention video and had everyone give a moment of silence for those, not with us.
Talking about his own story of addiction and depression, he shared how the demons almost got him this past February. Choking up in front of his son (despite admitting he hoped tonight he might not), he reminded us that this was our people. Our therapy session, and that we needed to let it out and enjoy it.
Photo-Jordan RaiffPhoto-Jordan Raiff
Following that, Dan Donegan played a fantastic solo to re-orient the crowd, and work into “Land of Confusion.” For me, this is a song that never gets old. The nods to the original artist’s Genesis that instantly come to mind as they play always bring back tons of great memories.
Naturally, the crowd was singing along loudly, and keeping the positive energy flowing through the Amp. “The Animal” made its tour debut as well, and it was a magnificent touch before Mike Wengren hit his drum solo. An acoustic version of “Sound of Silence” followed two songs later, with various artists joining to help keep the acoustics of their cover of the Simon and Garfunkel tune.
Photo-Jordan RaiffPhoto-Jordan Raiff
Bringing out a fan from the meet and greet to tell his story, this young man shares his story of the loss of his family members, and especially the loss of his mother. Draiman not only invited him to stay for “The Light” but the rest of the band honored him as well. It was an emotional moment, with many around the Amp wiping their eyes.
Photo-Jordan RaiffPhoto-Jordan Raiff
“The Light” followed, with the Amp lighting up via lighters and cell phones during the chorus lines. With a near-capacity crowd, it was almost daylight even though the stage lights died down during this part. It was a tremendous feeling and overall sense of family. Using “Unstoppable”, “Down With the Sickness,” and “Inside the Fire” for the encore, the band capped off an amazing 20-song total set.
Photo-Jordan RaiffPhoto-Jordan Raiff
With Tampa on the later side of the mid-tour, the tour winds through Raleigh, NC on August 7th, Bristow, VA on August 9th, before wrapping up on September 2nd in Noblesville, Indiana. While the lack of Jinjer in Tampa was a downer for many, they’ll be back for the rest of the tour, with Breaking Benjamin also there for most of them as well!!

MidFlorida Credit Union Amphitheater was the host to a sold-out show featuring Five Finger Death Punch, Breaking Benjamin, Nothing More and Bad Wolves. The tour is co-sponsored by Live Nation and Frank Productions and due to immense popularity, it has been extended into the fall. As an added bit of kudos to the bands, a portion of all ticket sales was donated to two charity organizations. Five Finger Death Punch is supporting C.O.P.S – Concerns Of Police Survivors, and Breaking Benjamin choosing Prevent Child Abuse America. Both amazing causes helping those in need.

The rain god[s] would smile down upon Tampa this night, the on and off showers that are common during this time of year were nowhere in sight. Temperatures in the 80s were a welcome relief for the crowd since we’ve had some high 90s and extreme humidity lately. Arriving at the Amphitheater, it was packed to the gills. Even from the outside, you could see that nearly every seat was filled, even the premier and VIP parking was nearly filled to capacity. The faithful metalheads of Tampa turned out for a show of epic proportions, and they would not be disappointed.
Benjamin Burnley Breaking Benjamin (Photo-Jaime Rodriguez)
Kicking off the night was Bad Wolves. After lead singer Tommy Vext filled in for 5FDP’s Ivan Moody’s departure on a previous tour, this band gained a massive following. Making their mainstream debut with a cover the “Zombie” from The Cranberries, their debut album Disobey has found terrific success.
Opening with their politically charged track “Officer Down,” Bad Wolves quickly got the crowd jumping and headbanging along with them. Following up with the concert stadium anthem “Learn to Live,” they really found their stride quickly, and performed like a veteran act instead of a new ‘up and coming’ group. While only playing a seven-song set, they served as a terrific preview of what was left to come.
Jonny Hawkins Nothing More (Photo-Jaime Rodriguez)
Nothing More invaded the stage, and kicked off their set with “Do You Really Want it?” the second single off of their album The Stories We Tell Ourselves. Although originating in 2003, this is only their second label release. Lead singer Jonny Hawkins moved the crowd with his melodic vocals and high energy that set the pace for an entertaining set.
Mark Vollelunga Nothing More (Photo-Jaime Rodriguez)
Guitarist Mark Vollunga and bassist Daniel Oliver provided intense and melodic harmonies, while drummer Ben Anderson set the foundation for their powerful and undeniably honest songs about the issues that plague our times. With songs like “Let ‘em Burn,” “Don’t Stop,” and the Grammy-nominated “Go to War.”
Jonny Hawkins Nothing More (Photo-Jaime Rodriguez)
Nothing More played with passion and honesty rarely seen in music today. The crowd really seemed to connect with the band when they played their 2014 hit “Jenny,” a song about the battle with addiction that deeply affected Jonny’s sister, and consequently the whole family. At the end of the night, they really set the stage on fire with their cover of Skrillex’s “First of the Year (Equinox).”
Daniel Oliver Nothing More (Photo-Jaime Rodriguez)
One of the best sights of the night came when Jonny mounted the most entertaining, high rising, attention-grabbing, hydraulic driven contraption the stage has probably ever seen. The “Scorpion Tail” as it’s called has levers flying everywhere; buttons, gears, and drums, it moved more like a mechanical bull. I was honestly scared for him a few times, as I thought for sure he was going to fall off. Yet Hawkins handled this beast like a champ.
Jonny Hawkins Nothing More (Photo-Jaime Rodriguez)
Nothing More concluded their set with “Salem” with the crowd joining in by screaming “Burn The Witch” in unison with the band. Nothing More is hands down one of the most original bands to come out in the rock world in a long time. I can say without question that I really enjoyed seeing their show, and would make the effort to see them again.
Mark Vollelunga Nothing More (Photo-Jaime Rodriguez)
Up next to the stage came the multi-platinum recording artists Breaking Benjamin who are out supporting their newest release Ember. They started their set with “Red Cold River” a song that peaked at #2 on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock Songs chart. Singer Benjamin Burnley brings to the stage an angst and grind that only comes from years as a musician, and it seemed that the crowd related to him from song one.
Aaron Bruch Breaking Benjamin (Photo-Jaime Rodriguez)
Bassist Aaron Bruch took over the mic and sang “Believe,” which was nothing less than mind blowing. One thing to note about Breaking Benjamin is that the current lineup is completely stacked with amazing singers. Guitarist Keith Wallen and Bruch were hand-picked for their vocal ability and they were producing amazing harmonies throughout their set. The crowd sang at the top of their lungs along with Burnley as they played their hits “I Will Not Bow” & “Never Again.”
Benjamin Burnley Breaking Benjamin (Photo-Jaime Rodriguez)
Keith Wallen Breaking Benjamin (Photo-Jaime Rodriguez)
Probably one of the coolest parts of their performance was when they played the “Imperial March” from Star Wars, with every Star Wars fan in the crowd going nuts! This was just a lead into a medley of a few select covers which the crowd ate up. Tool’s “Schism,” Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” Pantera’s “Walk” (which sent the crowd into a frenzy), and ending with Metallica’s “Sad But True.”
Benjamin Burnley & Aaron Bruch Breaking Benjamin ( Photo Travis Failey )
You couldn’t have asked for a better set-list. All your favorites, both new and old, with a few covers to boot. Breaking Benjamin kept improving throughout the night as the minutes and their set seemed to fly by. With all their energy and talent you just didn’t want them to leave the stage.
Shaun Foist Breaking Benjamin (Photo-Jaime Rodriguez)
Finally, the time had come for the band that Tampa’s Heavy Metal crowd came to see. FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH!!!! There aren’t words to describe the feeling in the amphitheater as everyone, and I mean everyone was waiting for them to take the stage!!! You could feel the electricity in the air; coursing through your veins as the anticipation built. Then the curtain dropped….
Ivan Moody 5FDP (Photo-Jaime Rodriguez)
Right out the gate, 5FDP lead off with a brutal throat punch that was “Lift Me Up.” Every head was banging; fists in the air, aggression at full tilt! Made you want to hit the gym and bench press 500lbs and scream at the top of your lungs! Ivan Moody gripped the crowd with such intensity and you could see it from his head to his toes, a true showman. When they played “Wash it All Away,” there wasn’t a person left in their seat. It became a heavy metal MOB!
Jason Hook 5FDP (Photo-Travis Failey
I don’t know if MidFlorida Credit Union Amphitheater has seen such power, and this was a true sight to behold. The pyro, the flames, the sheer raw power of this band could not be contained, and neither could Zoltan Bathory’s energetic licks. Chris Kael’s bass and Jeremy Spencer’s drums drove the music into the heart of everyone in attendance. Huge supporters of the Military, 5FDP played their rendition of “Bad Company” dedicating it to those who served. Tears could be seen streaming down the face of a member of the crowd as they sang along.
Zoltan Bathory 5FDP(Photo-Jaime Rodriguez)
While hard to follow such a powerful rendition, 5FDP slowed it down a bit. With a small acoustic set, featuring only Ivan and Jason Hook on acoustic guitar. Even the slower acoustic versions of “Wrong Side of Heaven” and “Remember Everything” had every bit of fortitude as the electric performances. As they played on through the evening, they arrived at their version of the Offspring’s “Gone Away.”
Ivan Moody 5FDP ( Photo Jaime Rodriguez )
If you think 5FDP’s studio recording is good, the live performance is a metric ton better. Winding down the night with their final song “The Bleeding,” all bets were off as they left nothing on the stage. As big and bad as this band is, they care; they care about their fans. Throughout the night they interacted with their fans and really showed their appreciation for their support. Pretty refreshing to see a group that has made it this big and genuinely connects with their supporters. Passing out tons of guitar picks, singling out two truly metal kids who caught Ivan’s eye to receive special gifts, and taking time to make contact past the first few rows of the pit, it was one of the best endings of any metal show for the fans.
Chris Kael 5FDP (Photo-Jaime Rodriguez)
This was a great night for Tampa; to see four talented, world-renowned, and hard rocking acts in one venue. All in all, it was a perfect night for such a show. The weather cooperated, the temperature was terrific and the music was amazing. If you haven’t made it out to catch this tour so far, there is a second leg that will be kicking off at the end of September! You won’t be disappointed.

Godsmack’s Sully Erna said, “We’re honored to be headlining the Louder Than Life festival in Louisville this year! Looking forward to partying with all of you again real soon!”
Benjamin Burnley of Breaking Benjamin commented, “We’re excited to come back to Louisville for Louder Than Life 2018 and play songs from our new album EMBER for the first time in Kentucky! We always have a good time there and look forward to what we know will be a kickass show.”
Festival producer Danny Wimmer, founder of Danny Wimmer Presents, explained, “I couldn’t be prouder of what we have accomplished since the inception of the festival. In five years, Louder Than Life has become the largest rock ‘n’ roll whiskey festival in the world, and I see no better way to celebrate its 5th year than to close out the weekend with Nine Inch Nails and Ice Cube.”
In addition to performances from top music artists, attendees at Louder Than Life will enjoy a variety of onsite food and beverage options celebrating the unique spirits and food of the Louisville region.
Attendees 21+ up can choose to visit Bourbon World presented by the Louisville Courier Journal, and enjoy crafted cocktails at the exclusive Down The Rabbit Hole Speakeasy; sip fine wine at the Caduceus Wine Garden; or enjoy a local brew at the Craft Beer Bar. Day 2 of Monster Energy’s Fort Rock on Sunday was a beautiful but hot, partly cloudy afternoon with a nice breeze that kept things tolerable. Today’s lineup provided a much “tamer” sound, with bands like Red Sun Rising, Sevendust, Pop Evil and Stone Sour, with Ozzy closing the weekend out.
Mike Protich-Red Sun Rising (Photo-Travis Failey)
After Tyler Bryant and the Shakedown and Toothgrinder finished with the day’s opening sets, Mike Protich and Red Sun Rising started off a bit weary. Protich addressed the early rising and obviously a bit spent crowd by asking for some help energy wise because they aren’t used to getting up that early. The crowd obliged as Run Sun Rising opened with their soon to be released single, “Push” off their new album, Thread.
Ryan Williams-Red Sun Rising (Photo-Travis Failey)
They followed up with their other well known sing-along song, “The Otherside” and “Amnesia.” “Amnesia” was also the funkiest song of the weekend at Fort Rock. Red Sun Rising followed up with “Emotionless”, which hit the number one spot on the mainstream rock chart, and closed their set with “Deathwish.”
Jonas “Kungen” Jarlsby-Avatar (Photo-Travis Failey)
Red Sun Rising got the early crowd ready for the most theatric and heaviest band of the day, Avatar. Sweden’s Avatar, the 2017 winner of Metal Hammer Golden Gods’ Breakthrough Band, is out promoting their new album, Avatar Country, which was released last January. They opened the show with “A Statue of the King” which featured a fully dressed king on his thrown, guitarist Jonas “Kungen” Jarlsby.
Johannes Eckerström-Avatar (Photo-Travis Failey)
After opening with “A Statue of A King” vocalist Johannes Eckerström stated that “their attire was made for a more Nordic climate” as sweat dripped from his forehead. Avatar treated the crowd to a theatric performance, complete with synchronized head banging/twirling, as they played “Let it Burn,” “Bloody Angel” “Smells Like a Freakshow” and closed the show with “Hail the Apocalypse.” Avatar continues to put on must see performances at festivals but I also suggest seeing these guys in a club setting when they can play their full set.
Lajon Witherspoon-Sevendust (Photo-Travis Failey)
Festival veterans, Sevendust, pounced on the stage after “Black Friday” by Megadeth was potted down by the soundman. It was a high energy six-song-set by Lajon and the boys. Sevendust started with “Dirty” the first release from their new album, All I See Is War, due to be released on May 11, 2018.
Lajon Witherspoon-Sevendust (Photo-Travis Failey)
The always grateful, Lajon, thanked the fans for coming out and supporting Sevendust throughout the years, and talked about how much he enjoys the festival season because he gets to hang out with the guys in other bands that are usually continents away. A rock star family reunion, if you will. He also thanked the security guards and the photographers in the pit which was much appreciated.
Morgan Rose-Sevendust (Photo-Travis Failey)
I will always remember the first time that I saw Sevendust at the 1998 Ozzfest in South Fl. It’s hard to believe that that was 20 years ago, but here we were, in Sunrise, with Sevendust playing once again with Ozzy. They are still the humble group of guys that they were back then and Sevendust continues to attain new fans as well as keep the ones that have been with them since the beginning.
Leigh Kakaty-Pop Evil (Photo-Travis Failey)
It’s been ten years since I first heard Pop Evil’s “Hero” for the first time and since then, it’s been a chart topping ride for Pop Evil. The band is out promoting Pop Evil’s fifth studio, self-titled album, which was released last February. Singer Leigh Kakaty strutted onto the stage as drummer Hayley Cramer hit the kit. Cramer is the most recent addition to Pop Evil and joined the band just prior to the World Loudest Month two years ago, replacing Chachi Riot.
Hayley Cramer-Pop Evil (Photo-Travis Failey)
Cramer is a solid drummer and she puts on a hell of a show with backline partner and bassist, Matt Dirito. After opening with “Deal With The Devil,” Pop Evil moved through their eight-song-set with a rollercoaster of energy that was highlighted by the songs, “Waking Lions,” “Torn To Pieces,” and the finale, “Trenches.”
Matt Dirito-Pop Evil (Photo-Travis Failey)
The Fort Rock crowd was then treated to a different flavor of sounds as Hollywood Undead brought their masks and their beats to Markum Park. The Los Angeles based band features multiple vocalists and instrumentalists and shy away from “formula” rock and blend multiple genres of rap and rock to provide a party-like energy-filled atmosphere. Out promoting their October 2017 release, Five, Hollywood Undead kicked off their set with “Whatever it Takes“ and then “UnDead.”
Hollywood Undead (Photo-Travis Failey)
The band removed their masks after the first couple of songs and brought a shirtless little boy on stage and asked him what he wanted to hear, to which he replied, “Comin’ In Hot.” The youngster stayed on stage (one hand on his belly and the other throwing horns) with the band throughout the song and then was escorted off by Sunrise PD to help him get back to his parents. Hollywood Undead then turned Markham Park into a trampoline as bodies bounced up and down throughout “War Child” and closed their set with “Day of the Dead.”

Jeff Gutt (Photo-Travis Failey)
One of the most talked about bands on Sunday prior to their set was a renewed Stone Temple Pilots. Founding members, brothers Robert and Dean DeLeo, and drummer Eric Kretz, were joined by new vocalist, Jeff Gutt. Gutt was a former The X Factor contestant and has been their new singer since November 2017.

Dean DeLeo-STP (Photo-Travis Failey)
With the focus being on him, Jeff Gutt did a great job singing the STP classics, “Wicked Garden,” “Vaseline” and “Plush.” His stage swagger was evident and the band looked like they were having fun again on stage during their new single “Meadow””Dead and Bloated” and “Sex Type Thing.” STP is now looking forward to continuing their legacy in a positive fashion that has been unfortunately tarnished by tragedy.
Corey Taylor-Stone Sour (Photo-Travis Failey)
Sometimes superstars come in small packages. Thankfully for the rock world, one of them is Corey Taylor, the front-man for not only Slipknot, but also a Fort Rock veteran band, Stone Sour. Founded by Taylor in 1992, Stone Sour has been on fire with hit records and singles since 2005’s Come What(ever) May.

Taylor came out to a fevered crowd in a Brittany Spears shirt and doused the crowd with water bottles while confetti was shot out of cannons. Stone Sour’s eleven-song-set included Taylor’s solo performance of “Through Glass” while the rest of the guys took a break backstage. The crowd was happy to help Corey out with the chorus and Taylor smiled in appreciation.

Benjamin Burnley-Breaking Benjamin (Photo-Travis Failey)
As the sun started to set on day two of Fort Rock, Breaking Benjamin took stage to a celestial eyeball backdrop and proceeded to take their fans on a memorable auditory journey. Founding member and singer Benjamin Burnley commanded the crowd with venom and vigor like I haven’t seen from him before.
Jasen Rauch-Breaking Benjamin (Photo-Travis Failey)

Keith Wallen-Breaking Benjamin (Photo-Travis Failey)
Breaking Benjamin opened with their new single “Red Cold River” and continued with their mainstream rock chart topping hits, “I Will Not Bow” “Angels Fall,” and closed with “The Diary of Jane.” A big highlight of the day and of their set was a mash up of “The Imperial March, Schism, Smells Like Teen Spirit & Walk,” which then lead to a drum solo.
Benjamin Burnley & Aaron Bruch -Breaking Benjamin (Photo-Travis Failey)
Breaking Benjamin, with their softer sound may not be loved by all the metal fans, but what they do, they do to perfection, and the band has a solid fan base and albums sales to back it up. Breaking Benjamin will be going out on one of the bigger summer tours with Five Finger Death Punch, Nothing More and Bad Wolves.

It a was perfect ending for Monster Energy’s Fort Rock in Markham Park when Ozzy Osbourne and his amazing band took the main stage. Thousands of people gathered to see Ozzy perform under a full moon for possibly the last time in South Florida. As Zakk Wylde strummed the first notes of “Bark at the Moon,” the crowd howled with delight and in turn, was treated to a collection of tracks from Ozzy’s solo material as well as songs from his Black Sabbath catalogue.
(Photo-Travis Failey)
(Photo-Travis Failey)
With a huge burning cross as a backdrop, Ozzy looked a bit heavier than in the past, but healthy. He didn’t seem to have any obvious vocal issues and if there were any, his band covered it up. Zakk, Rob and Tommy have been with Ozzy for years now and always put on an amazing show themselves. Zakk went into the crowd for his solo during “War Pigs” and they did a four song instrumental medley that included “Miracle Man, Crazy Babies, Desire, & Perry Mason.” It was great seeing Ozzy again as you never know when it may be the end for the legend.

This year’s Monster Energy’s Fort Rock was a huge success. I only witnessed one arrest as the local police used discretion in regard to making mass arrests due to marijuana use. The security team was also amazing. They handled the mosh pits and crowd surfers with care and extreme tactfulness. The food options were plentiful with a few bargains to be found, and both day’s lineup and schedules seemed to go off without a hitch.

As fans, we also need to thank Danny Wimmer and his team at Danny Wimmer Presents and AEGLive. They continue to provide us with the World’s Loudest Mouth Festivals that are well run and cater to the rock and metal community, and I for one, am already looking forward to next year.

After 5 years in Fort Myers, Monster Energy Fort Rock moved to its new venue in Sunrise, Florida’s Markum Park. Danny Wimmer Presents with AEG Presents determined that South Florida’s Biggest Rock Experience outgrew its old digs in Fort Myers and moved the April 28th and 29th, 2018 Festival to the expanded capacity venue.
This year’s lineup included a wide range of genres, from the Prince of Darkness, Ozzy, to hip hop rock, Hollywood Undead, metal thrashers, Trivium and Hatebreed, to today’s hottest rock bands: Shinedown, Godsmack, Halestorm, Stone Sour, Five Finger Death Punch, Sevendust and Seether. The early bands had 35 minute sets, Halestorm had 50 minutes to give us a little mayhem, and the last three bands had 70 minutes each.
Lzzy Hale-Halestorm (Photo-Travis Failey)
Day one was a hot, breezy, not a cloud in the sky kinda day. It rained the night before, so I was worried that the park would be muddy, but luckily that was not the case. Markum Park is a spacious park, with a lake and two stages, right next to each other (same basic set up as last year) , and three huge video screens. For a few extra bucks, you could purchase a VIP pass, which benefits included a VIP only entrance lane into the park, large tented viewing area, with seating/tables, and a VIP lounge area with dedicated bar, beverage and food venders. While the food prices were a little on the high side ($15 for a cheese steak), there were lots of options for every budget.
(Photo-Travis Failey)
We arrived at Markum Park just in time to hear Bad Wolves play Cranberry cover, “Zombie.” Apparently Bad Wolves “Zombie” is the first “heavy metal song” to make it to #1 on ITUNES. After acknowledging Dolores O’Riordan’s tragic and ill timed passing, Bad Wolves’ vocalist, Tommy Vext, announced that all the proceeds from the song go to Dolores’ three kids. You may recall that O’Riordan was found dead on the very day (January 15, 2018) she was scheduled to record her vocal tracks for the remake. The early crowd in attendance cheered, and added their own vocals when they sang along to “Vext.”
Josh Scoggin-68 (Photo-Travis Failey)
Georgia noise punk band, ‘68, was up next on this now blistering hot day. If you’re not familiar with this 2 man show, you might be surprised at the sound that comes out of this singer/guitarist and drummer. And believe it or not, these guys were playing some super heavy rock! At one point 68’s singer, Josh Scogin, threw his guitar straight up into the rafters and caught it! Another thing I’ve never seen before, Josh took down the set and drum kit, bit by bit, until everything on stage was gone, leaving his drummer, Niko Yamada, with only his sticks. These guys are out of the festival tour, so get there early and check out this duo of talented musicians.

Texas Hippie Coalition was up next. The band is fronted by Big Dad Ritch and THC brought their own sound that they describe as Red Dirt Metal to this year’s Fort Rock. It’s a combination of outlaw country, toss in a dash of Southern-fried classic rock and mix it with some potent Texas power grooves. Never hearing or seeing THC perform before, I was pleasantly surprised with their set.
Big Dad Ritch-Texas Hippie Coalition (Photo-Travis Failey)
Big Dad Ritch controls the stage like a maestro while his young buck backing band gets out on the front line to put on a full on show for the fans and especially the ladies. Guitarists Cord Pool and Nevada Romo not only have perfect stage names, but their lead riffs are impressive and original. Texas Hippie Coalition are out promoting Dark Side Of Black on a U.S. tour that runs through June 16th.
Texas Hippie Coalition (Photo-Travis Failey)
Another first for me was 2017 Loudwire’s Metal Song of the Year winner PowerTrip. The band took home the Hand of Doom for their song “Executioner’s Tax (Swing of the Axe)”. The five- piece from Texas is a no-frills, all substance metal/thrash band that took the stage while Slayer was potted down at the sound board. I was thinking that they had some balls coming out using Slayer as their bumper music, but damn they pulled it off.
Riley Gale-Power Trip (Photo-Travis Failey)
Vocalist Riley Gale doesn’t care about his apparel but neither do his fans. Old-schoolers and new, appreciate Power Trip carrying the torch for thrash metal and how well they do it. The dual guitar attack of Blake “Rossover” Ibanez and Nick Stewart switched out leads and were very impressive throughout their hard hitting and exhausting 7 song set. There was also more headbanging during Power Trip’s set than any other through the weekend.
Blake Ibanez-Power Trip (Photo-Travis Failey)
A veteran of the World’s Loudest Month, Trivium, and founding member Matt Heafy put on another memorable performance at Fort Rock. These guys always give 100%, no matter where they are slotted during the festival. Opening with the title track from their release “The Sin and the Sentence,” Trivium then followed up with one of the heavier songs of the weekend with fan favorite “Throes of Perdition.”
Matt Heafy-Trivium (Photo-Travis Failey)
Trivium’s been around since 2003, but is now getting the recognition it deserves with a help from Sirius/XM Octane and Liquid Metal. Trivium’s recent single, “The Heart From Your Hate,” has gained the band a new fans who were happy to help Heafy sing the chorus throughout Markham Part. While Trivium has experimented with their sound a bit to appeal to the “mainstream,” they have stayed true to their sound that they have had since the onset of their career.
Matt Heafy-Trivium (Photo-Travis Failey)
Jamey Jasta-Hatebreed (Photo-Travis Failey)
The always-smiling Sirius/XM’s Jose Mangin hit the Fort Rock’s Yellow Stage and introduced the next band, Jamey Jasta’s Hatebreed. Formed in Connecticut in 1994, Hatebreed has survived multiple lineup changes with Jasta and bassist Chris Beattie being the remaining founding members. Hatebreed is on the World’s Loudest Month festival circuit in support of The Concrete Confessional on the 20 Years of Desire & 15 Years of Perseverancetour. Jasta commanded the crowd and his band through a brutal ten song set that included “Through The Threshold” and “Beholder of Justice.”
Jamey Jasta-Hatebreed (Photo-Travis Failey)
Underoath was the last hardcore aggressive band before the transition to the rock hitmaker’s portion of Saturday’s lineup. Underoath has an interesting band lineup with two drummers and a keyboardist thrashing while he crushed the black and the white keys.
Aaron Gillespie-Underoath (Photo-Travis Failey)
The combination of lead vocalist Spencer Chamberlain along with founding member and drummer, Aaron Gillespie, gave the now-packed Markham Park their own version of metalcore Christian based themed originals, “In Regards to Myself”, and the song that has been getting a lot of airplay on Sirius/XM’s Octane, “Rapture.” “Rapture” also distinguishes itself from the rest of Underoath’s set by being more melodic than aggressive, as they also try to capture a broader audience.
Next up was the only female fronted band in this year’s Fort Rock lineup, Halestorm. Lzzy and the guys stormed the stage, and Lzzy proceeded to put on possibly her best performance ever, showcasing her unbelievable vocal range. Halestorm, as they like to do, opened their set with new song, “Black Vultures” off their upcoming album that’s due to come out in a couple of months.
Halestorm treated the crowd to “Apocalyptic”, “It’s Not You” and “I Get Off.” Drummer and Lzzy’s little brother, Arejay, busted out the big sticks for during his mandatory drum solo. Lzzy killed it, while she screamed her way into the crowd’s Halestorm virgins’ hearts. I saw more than one nod of approval from the male dominated crowd as the show went on.
Joe Hottinger & Lzzy Hale-Halestorm (Photo-Travis Failey)
Bullet For My Valentine once again brought the “Fever” to Fort Rock along with “Your Betrayal”, but unfortunately left out one of their biggest hits, “Scream Aim Fire” during their Fort Rock Set. The Fort Rock festival veterans sported a multi-colored winged backdrop with singer and guitarist Matt Tuck and the boys transitioning to a more mature release in their recent single, “Over It.” BFMV also included their previous hit in “Waking the Demon” in their limited set timeframe.

Brent Smith, and the guys from Shinedown are out promoting their newly released album, Attention Attention. They got the tired crowd going with “Sound of Madness” then “Bully”, “Simple Man” and closed their set with the new single, “Devil.” Brent looked and sounded great, and although it was still light outside, the pyro was impressive. Brent is a talker, so he addressed the crowd and asked everyone to look to their right and left and introduce themselves to their “neighbor,” reminding the crowd that rock and roll is not a genre, it’s a life style.

Eric Bass-Shinedown (Photo-Travis Failey)
A visibly heavier Ivan Moody and Five Finger Death Punch hit the stage just as the day was beginning to wind down. Ivan looked healthy, angry and sported a new head tattoo. 5FDP got the crowd going with “Under and Over It”, and “Wash it all Away.” The band has always supported our troops, and true to form, Ivan thanked all the veterans in attendance prior to performing their cover of “Bad Company.” After a couple recent setbacks due to internal health issues, FFDP has a renewed purpose and will be out on tour this summer with Breaking Benjamin, Bad Wolves and Nothing More.

Ivan Moody and Jason Hook-FFDP (Photo-Travis Failey)
Godsmack, Saturday’s headliner, took the stage promptly at 9:40. Markum Park has an 11:00 curfew. As they often do, Godsmack put on a solid show and impressive pyro display. At one point, the pyro was accompanied by four heart beat skipping booms. Godsmack just released their new album the day before on April 27th.
Sully Erna-Godsmack (Photo-Travis Failey)
Front man, Sully Erna said that the crowd looked one dimensional and ordered the ladies to get up on their man’s shoulder so it would look like a rock show. The audience complied. Like the pyro, Godsmack kept the hits coming with “Crying Like a Bitch,” “Voodoo” and “I Stand Alone,” and ended with Godsmack’s latest release, “Bulletproof.”
Shannon Larkin-Godsmack (Photo-Travis Failey)
The day went off without a hitch, until we got to our cars. While the show may have been over at 10:50, most of the fans didn’t get out of Markum Park until after midnight. It seems that there was only one way out of the Park for the 30,000 fans. It was all fun and games until the concertgoers, many who had been there for eleven hours or more in the hot Florida sun, sat motionless in their cars for an hour. The two lanes out turned into three as tempers started to rise. If this event is to return to this venue, the parking and exiting of Markum Park must be addressed. Other than the parking debacle, the day was a perfect one for South Florida’s biggest rock festival.
