It’s a Blue on Black kind of night With Five Finger Death Punch, Brantley Gilbert and Cory Marks

Crossovers in music are nothing new. Aerosmith and Run DMC. Metallica and San Francisco Symphony. FFDP and Brantley Gilbert? That’s right, after their cover of Kenny Wayne Shepherd’s “Blue on Black” with Brian May of Queen and others joining in, they hit the road together. Joining them was Canadian country music sensation, Cory Marks.

    Photo-Jordan Raiff

Cory’s not a newcomer to the stage or music. For a few years now he has been cementing his status in county music, and it’s something people of all ages were there for. With his band starting the rain of guitar picks through the night, this electric stage performance set the bar high for the night. Coasting across the stage he made sure everyone felt the love, especially as he kept yelling “Tampa” to hype the crowd.

Playing through a seven-song set, he put a crushing touch on “Keep Doing What I Do”, “In Me I Trust” and “Blame It On The Double” to a rather full audience for the opening band. His incredibly talented set of touring musicians backing him play like a well-oiled machine.

    Photo-Jordan Raiff

Their fan interactions are just as powerful as Cory’s and it sets the stage for a great night of music. The backlit stage makes for an interesting mix of band lights and smoke for a unique experience, especially when he tosses out t-shirts and grabs a fan’s phone to record a quick clip!!

Brantley Gilbert has been at this for some time now. Over the course of his 15 years in the big time, he’s racked up a few CMAs, iHeart Radio awards, and some mainstream success with the song “Bottoms Up” as well as his cover with FFDP, and well as “A Country Boy Can Survive.” Naturally, all three were on tap tonight, along with 12 other tracks.

Emerging from the back to a dark but foggy and backlit stage and the start of “Back in Black”, Brantley Gilbert took command of the room from the opening notes of “Kick It in The Sticks.”

    Photo-Jordan Raiff

This kind of country anthem is one that both the guys on the farm and those who wish they could be can connect with, and even the metal heads found themselves nodding along as the country fans all around sang along. Jumping through “Hell On Wheels”, “Son of The Dirty South”, and “Country Must Be Country Wide” before landing on “One Hell of An Amen.”

    Photo-Jordan Raiff
    Photo-Jordan Raiff

Taking a moment to express his pride in being a southern man, and how in the south that means showing appreciation for the Veterans. Thanking them for their service, he dedicated the song to them, and the patriotism and love on his face were the signs of deep respect from a true American. With just three songs left in this 15-song set, he ended with “Read Me My Rights,” a song nearly half of the audience could personally identify with, and the other half had family that could attest to it.

Following a lengthy break to change over the stage, the lights dropped before FFDP took the stage. With the sounds of Ivan teasing the crowd through the mic, the roars of the crowd became deafening. As the curtain dropped, Washington monuments on both sides of the stage flanked an infinity-shaped snake behind the drum kit.

    Photo-Jordan Raiff

Kicking off with “Inside Out” Ivan ran around the stage a bit as he sang and tossed his sweater to a fan up on the rail. Carrying over through “Trouble” and into “Wash It All Away” you could sense and see a change in the crowd. Especially as the pyro kicked in at full force.

    Photo-Jordan Raiff

People of all ages connect deeply to the song, and you could see them hugging and dancing together as they sang. Even my non-metal head fiancé was surprised and touched at seeing this. Oddly enough, the photo pit and rail were “washed away” by Ivan’s water bottle mid-song.

    Photo-Jordan Raiff
    Photo-Jordan Raiff

Complete with a voiceover segue, “Jekyll & Hyde” came up next. With Ivan now doing another wardrobe change and coming out in a custom Lightning sweater, the energy in the building hit one of its highest peaks of the night. Fans followed his commands to raise their hands and waive them side to side, he paraded around the stage while dancing at times as he sang.

    Photo-Jordan Raiff

The energy coming from the stage by the entire band was being picked up by the audience and reshared back out. Seeing a kid pressed to the rail, Ivan shooed the wet photographers to the side so he could hand his signature cobra cane to the young man. His eyes shrink wrapped in tears, he was overcome with emotion being so close to him.

    Photo-Jordan Raiff
    Photo-Jordan Raiff

Ivan tossed out stacks of the FFDP signature cash as confetti coated the arena, and gave the sound guy what he had coming for forcing Ivan to push his voice too hard. Following the tongue-lashing, Ivan’s sound was not only much louder but also clearer. For “Sham Pain”, he really needed the extra range by not having to scream, or else he’d likely break his vocal cords.

    Photo-Jordan Raiff

Ivan brought back the patriotism as he came out with an American flag, waving it and telling the crowd “Every time I hear you chant ‘USA’ I know my grandfather can hear you!!” He explained how his grandfather served as a Marine as they launched into “Bad Company.”

    Photo-Jordan Raiff

The cover of the Bad Company signature tune that put them on the map with those outside the metal community still sounds just as amazing in 2022 as it did when they first released it. What wasn’t out then were the “F*ck Joe Biden” chants that also accompanied the intro. Given the lack of respect for the military given by the current administration and their pro-military stance, as shown in the video for the single, it fits well.

    Photo-Jordan Raiff
    Photo-Jordan Raiff

Following that, Ivan discussed his love for covers, and joked about someone yelling for “Freebird,” but not much of the crowd sang along beyond the opening bars. However, “You Remind Me” by Nickleback had a thunderous response. Joking about how guys will sing that with the lights down, but not up, he pressed through the rest of the 17-song set. Unfortunately “Wrong Side of Heaven” suffered from some problems getting into the right key, and it seemed to be a reflection of the earlier sound problems for Ivan. Mind you, the rest of the band’s guitars and bass sounded amazing.

    Photo-Jordan Raiff

With a side-versus-side competition for “Burn mother*cker, burn!!” between Ivan and bassist Chris Kael, the crowd somehow got even deeper invested in the set. As the rest of the band took a break with just the drummer lit, one of the best-lit and performed drum solos from Charlie Engen, came forth.

    Photo-Jordan Raiff

Not having seen him before, I was absolutely amazed at what he could do. Naturally, Zoltan Bathory and Andy James raised the bar once again after this brief break, and they had even the “seasoned” farmers in overalls and s*itkickers dancing around across the floor.

    Photo-Jordan Raiff
    Photo-Jordan Raiff

Heading into “Life Me Up” Ivan took the opportunity to recognize more members of the audience. One lady “Hack” chose one of Ivan’s bats over a hug for her 4-year sobirthday. Another guy whose social media content Ivan has grown to love also got a bat of his own. Ending with “The Bleeding” the band took a bow and preceded to hand out a ton of guitar picks, extra FFDP cash, drumsticks, and setlists.

After the band left and most of the crowd too, Ivan stayed around to shake hands, take photos, and give fans a real connection moment. I’ve never seen him do this before, and it was a real treat.

    Photo-Jordan Raiff

The tour rolls on, with dates scattering the country before ending back in Las Vegas on December 17th. If you haven’t caught these groups before, it’s worth the price to spring for floor tickets.

The energy on the floor for these bands is much stronger as you rub shoulders with your fellow knuckleheads. It’s strange seeing the energy-crossing genres like this when you see how so many paint country music and metal into different categories. Truth be told, both groups are the same people, just one has closer neighbors and grocery stores.

  • Andrei Vasilevskiy and the Lightning Blank The Canadians

Andrei Vasilevskiy and the Lightning Blank The Canadians

    Photo-Travis Failey

Andrei Vasilevskiy notched his 11th shutout of the season on Thursday night as the Lightning defeated the Canadians on home ice by the score of 4-0. He made big stops all night and got scoring contributions early in the first period on goals by Braydon Point and Nikita Kucherov.

    Photo-Travis Failey

“I didn’t play well the past few games, so it feels pretty good to get the shutout,” said Vasilevskiy, “But we played well defensively and we did a great job.’’ He made 32 saves on the night.

    Photo-Travis Failey

The Lightning got on the board early as Victor Hedman gave the Lightning a 1-0 lead at 49 seconds of the first period with a blast from the high slot. It was his first goal in 32 games.

“[Hedman is] a world-class defenseman, I think he’s the best in the League,” Lightning defenseman Mikhail Sergachev said. “He does everything well. 5-on-5, 4-on-5, 5-on-4, he’s just a rock. It’s great to have a player like that on the team.”

Alex Killorn also got the Bolts on the board in the 1st period with his 25th goal of the season. Killorn now has a career season high in points with 47.

    Photo-Travis Failey

“I think as you get older, you get more comfortable in the league, you find different ways to score,” Killorn said. “But it’s been going really well for me this year.”

“It seems like I’m just finding the right spots,” Killorn said, “and when I do get the opportunity, I’m making the most of it.”

    Photo-Travis Failey

There was some question in the offseason if Killorn would be back with the team and thankfully for the club, he wasn’t moved. He has been as stable and consistent as any player on the team this year and has been a big reason for their success. It also helps when you have 3 guys that have scored 25 or more goals at this point with Steven Stamkos (29) and Nikita Kucherov(32). Kucherov also scored in the second period Thursday to put the Lightning up 3-0.

The game got chippy late in the second period in front of Andrei Vasilevskiy’s net and continued after the second-period horn as a huge fight happened in the corner with the two main pugilists being Montreal’s Shea Webber and the Lightning’s Mikhail Sergachev. They went toe- toe with each other until Weber missed with a wild right as Sergachev connected with a couple of his own rights as he fell on top of Weber.

The rough play continued in the third with the Lightning trying to limit the Canadian’s chances while trying to keep the shutout in tow. Vasilevskiy stopped 12 shots in the 3rd with Victor Hedman cranking a slapshot past Carey Price at 1:03 left in the game. Hedman’s second goal of the night made the score 4-0 and with it the fans hit the stairs to try to beat the traffic.

    Photo-Travis Failey

Coach Cooper after the game “We asked them to be a little bit more responsible with the puck, [they] were tonight. The goalie was sharp. It’s another win for us. We’re not going to think too much about this one. We’ve got a tough three-game road trip ahead of us.”

    Photo-Travis Failey

Game notes: Kucherov has 26 points (10 goals, 16 assists) in 27 games against Montreal. … Vasilevskiy is 11-1-2 against the Canadiens. … Lightning defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk got his 300th NHL assist on Hedman’s second goal. Brayden Point had an assist and tied Chris Gratton for 13th on the Lightning points list (259).

Next up for the Lightning: The aforementioned three-game road trip that starts on Saturday night against the Bruins at TD Garden at 7pm.

  • Lightning Collapse Against The Coyotes

    Lightning Collapse Against The Coyotes

The Lightning were without two of their top stars on Monday as they faced the Coyotes at Amalie Arena. Steven Stamkos sat out the game which was described as a lower body injury but more specifically for body maintenance. Andrei Vasilevskiy was also out for the Lightning as Louie Domingue got the start against his former team.  Domingue was released by the Coyotes in late October and was acquired by the Lightning in mid-November and has been 6-2 with the Lightning and has won his last four starts.

The Coyotes came in losers of 2 straight and were on their 4th game of a 6 game roadie while the Bolts dropped their own game Saturday night against the Devils and led Boston in the Atlantic by 2 points prior to the opening puck drop. The Lightning also donned special warm up Jerseys in conjunction with the Tampa Bay Rays who are opening up their season at home on Thursday against the Red Sox.

It was another slow start again but not only from the Lightning but also from the Coyotes. There were lots of whistles and faceoffs with neither team lighting the lamp. The lack of flow played into the hands or should I say, skates of the Coyotes as they held the Lightning to just 7 shots on goal in the period which was the theme on the night.

There were also only two 2 penalties called in the period and both were on the Lightning. One of the penalties carryied over into the 2nd as Cedric Pacquette took an interference call at the 19:45 mark.

The score remained a tie until Trevor Murphy crushed a blast from the right faceoff circle passed Domingue who didn’t even see it. It was Murphy’s 1st goal of the season and put the Coyotes up 1-0 at the 10:45 mark of the second.

The score remained the same until Jakob Chychrun made it 2-0 at 17:22 with a one-timer on the power play from the hash marks off a pass from Richard Panik. This came off a goalie interference call that was drawn by Antii Raanta. Raanta was solid all night in net but was only tested a few times in the first two periods as the Coyotes had a 2-0 lead after 2.

The home crowd was antsy going into the third but they had confidence in the Lightning’s ability to comeback especially after the performance against the Leafs last week. Unfortunately for the fans and the team, there would not be a comeback on Monday night as the two teams exchanged 3rd period goals. Nikita Kucherov scored his 38th goal of the season on the power play with 5:23 remaining but that was the closest they would get as the Coyotes outhustled the Lightning by a final of 4-1.

    Notes:

The Lightning had a total of 20 shots in the game while allowing 34 and are back on the road in a huge matchup against Atlantic division rival Boston on Thurday at 7pm

Adam Erne went off with an apparent knee or groin injury and looked to be ok after the game.

    Lightning Scratches:

Callahan, Stamkos, Dotchin, Sustr, Budaj and Conacher.

  • Lightning Go to Overtime Again and Defeat the Panthers

Lightning Go to Overtime Again and Defeat the Panthers

The Florida Panthers came in to Amalie Arena on Tuesday night riding a season high 6 game win streak as they had won 8 of their last 10. The Lightning were riding a streak of their own by playing 5 overtime games in a row where they put 9 points into the total column.

Two of the hottest players in the league took the ice for the Panthers in forward Alexsander Barkov who had 10 points in the last 6 games and goalie Roberto Luongo was 5-0 with a .934 save percentage in the last 5 games.

The Panthers were making a push for the playoffs as the Lightning were trying to maintain their 6 point lead over Boston in the Atlantic and a 1 point lead over Nashville for the President’s Trophy.

The Panthers controlled play for most of the first period but Yanni Gorde put the Lightning on the scoreboard by corralling a bouncing puck off the boards, changed direction and lifted the puck past a diving Roberto Luongo.

Lightning goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy was outstanding early and often in the first and he had to be. Defensive lapses in the first period gave the Panthers numerous golden opportunities and number 88 was stellar.

The Panthers finally got one past Vasilevskiy as the Panthers crashed the net and Nicklaus Bjudstad shot the puck from the left goal line just over the shoulder and under the goal post to make the score 2-1.

The score remained 2-1 as the second period commenced and Yanni Gourde’s special rookie season continued with a slapshot from the circle just under 2 minutes in as the Lightning took a 3-1 lead. The Panthers continued their onslaught on the Lightning defense and Vasilevskiy and Nicklaus Bjudstad got his second goal of the game. Steven Stamkos got screened by the referee and Victor Hedman and J.T. Miller got caught standing in the crease as Bjudstad tapped one in to make it 3-2.

The Lightning got their two goal lead back late in the 2nd period as Roberto Luongo gave up a juicy rebound on a slapshot from Steven Stamkos and Alex Killorn made him pay. Luongo’s stick went flying across the ice as he dove to make the save as Killorn wristed the puck into the back of the net.

The Lightning two goal lead disappeared quickly in the third period as Nicklaus Bjudstad hit the hat-trick for the Panthers as the fans were getting back to their seats from the break. The Panthers had an extra jump in their stride and kept the heat on the Lightning as they continued to pummel Andrei Vasilevskiy with shots.

The Panthers also caught up and took the lead in the face-off circle late in the third period as the Lightning controlled the draw early in the game. Adrej Sustr took a penalty at the 4 minute mark in the third and  Vincent Trocheck made the Lightning pay to tie it up at 4.

The third period concluded with the score 4-4 and once again the Lightning went to overtime for the 6th straight game.

Both teams had opportunities in the extra period with the Lightning just missing as Steven Stamkos took a cross-ice no-look pass from Nikita Kucherov that everyone in the building thought was going in the net but it went just wide.

As time trickled off the clock, the Lightning continued to press the Panthers and Roberto Luongo when Brayden Point slipped past  Evgenii Dadonov and crushed a wrist shot top shelf past Luongo for his 10th game winner of the season including his 4th in overtime.

The Lightning gave up a staggering 49 shots on Tuesday night and hopefully that number will decrease as Ryan McDonaugh and Ondreg Palat should be in the Lightning lineup before this homestand concludes.

     Notes:

Yanni Gourde now has the Lightning record for most goals from a rookie with 24.

Brayden Point has 57 points and a plus 21 rating.

J.T. Miller continues to be a positive for the Lightning since being acquired at the trade deadline with a goal, an assist and 5 hits.

The Lightning did not have a power play opportunity with the Panther receiving 2 and scoring on one by Trocheck on a Andrej Sustr penalty in the 3rd.

Next up: The Rangers at home on Thursday night at 7:30

  • Moore or Less… I think You’ll Like Moore

Our favorite new guy who’s last name starts with a “Y” was back at it again yesterday signing free agent center Dominic Moore.  I somehow have a feeling this new look Lightning organization must find a way for Moore to fit into the system.  I say this because one alarming stat that hit me in the face is the fact that Moore has been with 7 NHL teams in 6 years.  This 29 year-old Thornhill Ontario native son must have a nice collection of NHL sweaters in his closet but he’s to find a home.

Moore’s best season was in 2008-09 with Toronto/Buffalo (uh, keep up… that was not an expansion team, he played 63 games with the Leafs and 18 games with the Sabres) when he tallied 13 goals and had 32 assists. Dominic appears to be big a strong center that can win face-offs but his 40 penalty minutes per season will not win over any disheartened Zenon fans. When does a tough guy get signed?

Moore did have 4 playoff goals last year with Montreal, yes fans that is 4 more than any Lightning player…does anyone know when Saw VI comes out?

This is Rick Sassone with Rocket Sports & Entertainment, I will see you, in the high slot!

  • Yzerman Great Move, Holmgren… What Were YOU Thinking?

It has only been a few days now. I needed to just sit back, hold my breath to make sure this really did happen.  Walker for Gagne?  Walker for Gagne?   Ok we’ll throw in a 4th round pick, still done! Like I mentioned in my July 15th RSE article, Will Things Turn Around this Year at 401 Channelside Drive?, yes this year is different.

The only negative I see so far, besides the “Z” thing, (many Lightning fans will closet root for the Islanders, that’s ok) is if this front office keeps making moves like this Lightning fans will not be hoping just for a #8 playoff spot, but how about a Southeastern Division title.  That’s right, that’s right we are coming after you Alexander; you and your 3rd place scoring title (Good job Stammer!).  I believe now, Lightning fans may have the “fan given” right to crank the expectations up, oh heck Stanley Cup!

And then there is the other side to this story, some things never change.  Philly fans are beside themselves once again, hey Philly fans if Rocky was real, he would have lost!

It seems like just yesterday; Ronde Barber’s interception to close the Vet, the Buccaneers advance to the Super Bowl to become champions, while McNabb chokes again.  And that humid day in Tampa on May 22, 2004, game seven, which sent the Flyers home to shave their playoff beards.  The Lightning, then after defeating Calgary, becomes Stanley Cup Champions.

It’s now over six years later Gagne for Walker, hey Holmgren, Is Daniel Briere on the block?  We might be looking to move Carter Ashton.  Come on Steve Y, its worth a phone call.

Well this hockey season we can bring it back, “Philly is still our B—–!”

  • Will Things Turn Around this Year at 401 Channelside Drive?

I have been asking myself that question every year since I became a season ticket holder 4 seasons ago. But as I look on the calendar for some strange reason I realize that I usually don’t even worry about our favorite group of black and blue clad hockey heroes until September. It is way too early to talk hockey. But, ahh, let me see… why is it July and I am starting to think Lightning Hockey? A new owner, new GM, new coach? No been there. Wait a minute, let’s go over this again and conduct a more in-depth analysis. Let’s compare this time to the last time we had the wholesale change… Owners, Oren Koules/Len Barrie; GM Brian Lawton and head coach Barry Melrose versus Owner, Jeff Vinik; GM Steve Yzerman; and head coach Guy Boucher. Ok, I’m done… my question is answered…YES THINGS WILL TURN AROUND this year at 401 Channelside Drive, yes the arena formally referred to, and still affectionately called, by us purists, “The Ice Palace”. (Somewhere naming rights became more important than us fans.)

Although Steve Y probably hasn’t unpacked all his boxes yet he has opened my eyes into believing things will be better on Channelside this year. Get to work Steve, welcome to Tampa; moving Andrej Meszaros, nice, 17 points in 81 games with a minus 14 last year, thank you for your participation Andrej. You can pick up your “I Used to Play for the Lightning” T-Shirt on the way out. Now I had someone mention they were not satisfied with Pavel Kubina, ok look… Kubina vs. Meszaros…done; ok next topic please. (NO! please not goaltending)
Not retaining “Z”, not good, I love this guy. Not signing Zenon Konopka for a relatively low salary is not computing for me. The man is a fan favorite, enforces the team at home and on the road, and wins the draw 60 plus percent of the time. I am a fan of # 4, Vincent, but his only weakness is the draw, beside the heart question (don’t worry Bolts fans, I have a solution for that, covered as we get closer to puck drop time)…hello has anyone noticed? Maybe “Z” can help Vincent… oh wait that won’t fly; Zenon is playing in Nassau County not Hillsborough County anymore. Anyway, “Hit Me Z” from the fans in Syracuse, I know you still have a following there, they still love you, now you’re back in New York State.
Now this is why I am a huge Steve Y fan and Jeff V too, for hiring Steve. My hockey super hero, Marty! Is Mr. St. Louis one of the most, yes I will used the cliché, “overachievers” you have seen in the history of professional sports. It really doesn’t matter what happens, our hockey heroes will get better as a team, let’s be patient, but Marty stays a Lightning! If you have children and want them to be athletes, show them Lightning 2-6 highlights… talent is over-rated, but hustle is the life blood of winning at any level in sports and life. Thank you Jeff, Steve and Guy. GO BOLTS!
