Threshers Overpower Tarpons 4-1 in Late Innings in Home Opener

The Clearwater Threshers opened their 2026 home slate in dramatic fashion on Tuesday night, using a massive late-inning rally to defeat the Tampa Tarpons 4-1 at BayCare Ballpark.

Fueled by lights-out bullpen pitching and clutch two-out hitting, the Threshers improved to 3-1 on the young Florida State League season while handing the Tarpons their fourth straight loss to drop them to 0-4.

For the first half of the game, pitching dominated the narrative. The Tarpons struck first in the top of the fourth inning, utilizing a patient walk, a stolen base, and a one-out RBI double to manufacture a 1-0 lead. It was a textbook example of small-ball execution, but it would be the only offense Tampa could muster all night as they were held to just two hits.

Threshers starter Brad Pacheco held the line, allowing just one run on one hit over four innings of work. The Clearwater bullpen then took total control, holding the Tarpons scoreless and hitless for the next four innings. Pitching prospect Brian Walters earned his first professional win (1-0), tossing three dominant innings of hitless relief while striking out two.

“The game plan was simple: attack the zone and trust the defense behind me,” Walters said. “Pacheco set a great tone early on, and my goal was just to keep the game within reach so our bats could do exactly what they did in the seventh. Getting the first professional win out of the pen feels great.”

Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the seventh, the Threshers finally found their offensive rhythm with two outs.

Jaeden Calderon—who finished with three hits and a stolen base for his sixth career three-hit game—sparked the rally with a single off Tarpons reliever Brian Arias. After a walk to Robert Phelps, Tyler Pettorini tied the game with an RBI single to right field, subsequently stealing second to keep the pressure on. Nathan Humphreys then drew a walk to load the bases, setting the stage for top catcher prospect Alirio Ferrebus.

Ferrebus jumped on a 2-0 pitch, driving a clutch two-run single down the right-field line to give Clearwater a 3-1 advantage and saddle Arias with the loss (0-1).

“I was just looking for a pitch I could drive,” Ferrebus said. “Arias fell behind 2-0, so I knew he had to come to me. The guys in front of me did an incredible job battling with two outs to keep the inning alive, and I just wanted to make sure I brought them home. Doing it in front of the home crowd for the home opener makes it even better.”

Jonathan Hogart added an exclamation point in the bottom of the eighth, launching a leadoff solo home run—his first of the season—to extend the lead to 4-1.

Reliever Gabe Craig came on in the ninth, working around a leadoff double to secure his first professional save and seal the victory.

“It was a total team effort tonight,” the Threshers’ manager said following the win. “Our pitching staff was phenomenal—holding a team to two hits is no small task. Offensively, we were quiet early, but we didn’t panic. Two-out hitting is the mark of a resilient team, and seeing Calderon, Pettorini, and Ferrebus string together those quality at-bats when the pressure was highest was exactly what you want to see out of this group.”
