Can’t Rain on Berger’s Parade

En route to his first career PGA tour win, Daniel Berger had to deal with the normal Sunday jitters as a leader, as well as an almost 4 hour rain delay and a charge from a group of the world’s best players.

After a severe weather cell blew through the TPC Southwind course in Memphis, Tennessee, the 23 year old Berger showed some early signs of nerves with a bogey on his opening hole. He righted the ship with birdies on 6 and 9 and by the turn was looking at a world-class group chasing him that included Phil Mickelson, Brooks Koepka, and Dustin Johnson who closed with a 63. The Florida State graduate managed to keep it together, with clutch birdies at 14 and 15 to seal a final round 67 and a three- stroke victory.

Continuing with the trend of the last 9 out of 11 winners at TPC Southwind, Berger led the field in greens in regulation hitting 54/72 (75%) for the week. Once again the par 70 course, which has more balls in the water than any other course on tour, showed the importance of 2^nd shot placement compared to driving distance. For example Mickelson, who finished in a tie for 2^nd, hit only 48% of fairways for the week and was within a shot of the lead on the back 9.
