Jets Fly past Lightning

Tampa, Fla. — The goalies were tested right from the start as the penalties started racking up just minutes into the first period, there was a total of six minutes of penalties after just four minutes of play.

The Lightning were really pounding the young Jets goaltender Commerce, Michigan native, Connor Hellebuyck.  The Lightning  had eight shots on goal within the first six minutes of the game.

With the first test of the game Lightning goaltender Andrei Vasilveskiy gave up the first shot by the Jets for a goal. At 7:25 in the first period Jets Mark Scheifele wrists one in.  A power play goal, which would be the only power play goal the Jets would score in four attempts.

The first period ended with the Lightning way ahead on shot count 17-6 , but behind on the scoreboard 1-0.

Matthew Peca got the scoring started for the Lightning at 3:43 as he wristed his first NHL goal past Connor Hellebuyck, with assists from Vladislav Namestnikov and Alex Killorn. The score was tied 1-1.

The tie was short lived as Nikita Kucherov committed a hooking penalty on a breakaway by Nikolaj Ehlers that resulted in a penalty shot. Nikolaj easily put the puck in the back of the net to give the Jets to a 2-1 lead. Shorlty after at 5:19 in the second, Jacob Trouba scored the third goal for the Jets. It was only the Jets thirteenth shot on goal of the game, as Andrei Vasilevskiy was feeling the heat.

The second period closed out with the Jets up 4-1, the fourth goal was scored by Dustin Byfuglien, who showed he’s not just a tough guy.

Ondrej Palat had a redeeming moment at the start of the third period, in-spite of having three penalties in the game,  he scored the second goal for the Lightning at 3:26 in the third. The Lightning seemed to gain some of their momentum back after that goal. Score was 4-2, and the Bolts were fighting their way back. Play was exciting on both sides of the ice, as both teams had lost of scoring chances, unfortunately for the Bolts Nikolaj Ehlers found a way to notch another goal for the Jets as they went ahead 5-2 at 9:28 in the third.

The Bolts still were not willing to give up the ghost yet as Nikita Kucherov found the back of the net for the Lightning at 12:22 in the third period. Kucherov’s 14th goal of the season. The crowd came to life in the “Oil Can” as the Bolts cut the lead back to two at 5-3.

Jets Jacob Trouba took a delay of game penalty putting the Bolts on the power play once again and once again Nikita Kucherov found the back of the net for his second goal of the game, two power play goals in a row for Kucherov.  Two power play goals for the game for the Lightning in seven attempts.  The place was jumping with excitement with the Lightning down by just one 5-4.

With the Lightning goaltender on the bench for the extra skater, rookie phenom Patrik Laine thread the 5-hole of defenseman Victor Hedman from around 80 feet out for 20th of the season and the Jets 6th of the game to gain the two goal lead back with just 1:23 left.

The Lightning will look to rebound on Thursday here vs Nashville and then head to Pennsylvania for two (Pittsburgh and Philadelphia).
