Defense is Key in Storm Win over SoulTampa, FLA. – Hobbled by a leg injury at the end of the third period, quarterback Randy Hippeard stepped up to connect with three fourth-quarter touchdowns, the last a 28-yard toss to T.T. Toliver with 56 seconds remaining as Tampa Bay pulled off a stunning, 56-49, win over the Philadelphia Soul Saturday on the Amalie Motor Oil Field in the Tampa Bay Times forum.

The Storm (6-6) defense was the difference as it stopped the Soul (6-6) on four 4th-down possessions.

Dexter Jackson’s hurry on Soul quarterback Dan Radabaugh, a missed field goal by Philadelphia’s Carlos Martinez, a sack for 10 yards on Radabaugh by Uriah Grant and Jammie Kirlew and Radabaugh’s incomplete pass to Ryan McDaniel with coverage by Storm defensive back Rod Isaac closed the door as he last two seconds went off the clock.
Trailing 49-34, Hippeard was 4-for-5 passing in the fourth, finishing with 14 of 26, for 217 yards and seven touchdowns. Wide receiver Joe Hills had six catches for 67 yards and four touchdowns.

Defensive back James Harrell had another outstanding game and for 6-yard pass interception return for a touchdown, a 27-yard missed field goal return and seven tackles he collected the game’s Riddell Defensive Player of the Game award.

By on September 5, 2013

TAMPA, FLA. – The Tampa Bay Storm has named Storm great and Arena Football League Hall of Fame member Lawrence Samuels the sixth head coach in franchise history, team president Derrick Brooks announced.

“We are happy to introduce Lawrence as our head coach,” said Brooks.  “Lawrence has been a staple of the Storm franchise since joining the team in 1994.  He has spent the past two seasons as an assistant coach and offensive coordinator.  We believe that he is ready to make the next step and take the reins as the team’s head coach.”

“I cannot imagine being the head coach of any other team,” said Samuels.  “I want to thank Derrick Brooks, Jeff Vinik, and the Storm organization for giving me this opportunity.  I look forward to getting to work and helping the Storm win its sixth ArenaBowl Championship.”

This will be Samuels’s first season as the head coach of the Storm.  He spent the previous two seasons as the team’s assistant coach and offensive coordinator.  Under his direction the team saw a vast improvement on the offensive end, finishing the 2013 season in the top-5 of several offensive categories including total offense and rushing offense.

Prior to joining the Storm coaching staff in 2011, Samuels spent two seasons as the wide receivers coach for Central State University (Wilberforce, OH).  He was also a wide receivers coach for the USA Football summer camps sponsored by the National Football League, where he helped teach the fundamentals and skills necessary to be an effective wide receiver and defensive back.  Samuels served two stints as the wide receivers coach for his alma mater, the University of West Alabama.

He spent 15 seasons with the Storm as a player and was a member of three ArenaBowl Championship teams.  The legendary AFL Ironman starred at both the wide receiver and linebacker positions, and finished his career as the franchise leader in receptions (967), receiving yards (11,078), receiving touchdowns (160), points scored (1,076), fumble recoveries (32), forced fumbles (20) and tackles (455.5).  He was the first player in AFL history to record 1,000 receptions; the sixth player ever in professional football history to reach that milestone.

Samuels was elected to the 2013 Arena Football Hall of Fame Class this past season.

The Shock came back at the half, scoring twice within the first five minutes of the second half, but the rally was short lived as the Storm scored on its next possession with a 42-yard reception by Joe Hills.

The highlight of the night for the Shock was a 58-yard kick return for a touchdown by defensive back Terrance Sanders.  The Shock outscored the Storm by 14 points in the third quarter, but it was not enough to overcome the Storm.  The team’s offense was led by Eric Meyer who through for 222 yards and six touchdowns, and two interceptions on 16-of-30 passing.  His primary target was Adron Tennell who caught eight passes for 133 yards and two touchdowns.

STORM OPEN TRYOUT CREATES OPPORTUNITIES

By on January 28, 2013

courtesy of the Tampa Bay Storm

TAMPA, FLA – The Tampa Bay Storm held an open tryout at the Tampa Bay Times Forum, on Saturday, January 26, looking for players to help improve on last season’s performance.

“Go out, give your best effort, and leave it all on the field,” said Storm president Derrick Brooks to the crowd.  “What we see now can effect what we do all season.”

With two guaranteed training camp invitations up for grabs, more than 100 hopefuls came out looking to seize the opportunity to play with the pros.  One of those individuals was U.S. Army Green Beret, Perry Blackburn, a 51-year old who last played organized football in high school.

“We’re all out here because of this one opportunity, and we can’t waste it,” said Blackburn pointing to his fellow competitors.  “It’s a chance of a lifetime and I wanted to come here to prove to myself, and the rest, that age does not matter.”

While Blackburn did not make the first round of cuts, he gave his best effort and proved for a day what he is able to do on the field and got a chance to play quarterback one more time.

“I just wanted an opportunity,” said Blackburn.  “When you have closes calls in combat you talk about what you want do with your brothers [in arms] and this is what I wanted to do, come out and compete.”

All the participants went through combine-style testing, positional drills and faced one-on-one competition.

“The tryout was a way for us to meet these guys and evaluate their talent,” said Storm director of player personnel David Wilson.  “They all put their best foot forward.”

Everyone brought their a-game with the sole purpose of impressing the staff, and they did not disappoint.

“We had a lot of talent out here today, especially on the offensive side of the ball,” said Storm head coach Dave Ewart.  “We’ll take our time reviewing the film, and take the best of the best.”

While the competition was stiff, only two will receive those coveted training camp invitations.

The Storm coaching staff will have a lot to think about over the next few days.

TAMPA BAY (courtesy of the Tampa Bay Storm) – The Tampa Bay Storm is pleased to announce the return of two additional players, defensive back Vance Cuff and wide receiver Carlos Singleton, from the 2012 roster as the exclusive period winds down prior to the start of free agency.

“Vance and Carlos joined us late last season when we had some players go down and did a good job stepping up,” said vice president of football operations Jeff Gooch.  “There is a role for each of those two and we believe the experience they gained at the end of last season will make them that much better entering the 2013 season.”

Cuff (5-foot-10, 178 lbs., Georgia) joined the team late in the 2012 season after spending time with the Montreal Alouettes in the Canadian Football League.  He appeared in and started three games at defensive back and recorded 12 tackles, including one for a loss, two pass breakups and an interception.  The former Bulldog appeared in 33 games while matriculating at Georgia.

Storm Resign Wasil and Serini

By on October 25, 2012

TAMPA BAY – The Tampa Bay Storm is pleased to announce the return of quarterback Stephen Wasil and center Brad Serini, as both players agreed to two-year deals.  The exclusive period runs until midnight October 28, during which time teams have exclusivity dealing with players from its previous season’s roster.

“We are excited to have both Stephen and Brad return,” said vice president of football operations Jeff Gooch. “Each of them, Stephen and Brad, showed tremendous growth this past season and will help to make us competitive for the upcoming season.”

Wasil (6-foot-3, 220 lbs., Albion, MI) agreed to a two-year contract that runs through the end of the 2014 season.  In his first season with the Storm and as a full-time starter he started 14 games leading the team to a 7-7 record.  Wasil was the first quarterback in Storm history to eclipse 300 yards passing in his first career start for the franchise.  He went on to finish the season with 3,664 yards passing with 71 touchdowns and 17 interceptions as he completed 60.1% of his passes (294-of-489).

He also led the team in with 140 yards rushing and 19 rushing touchdowns.  Wasil’s 19 scores on the ground is the second-highest single-season total in team history and second most by any player in the AFL during the 2012 season.  On July 14 versus the New Orleans VooDoo, and exciting 78-77 overtime victory at the Tampa Bay Times Forum, Wasil tied a franchise single-game record as he was responsible for 10 touchdowns in the game, seven via the air and three on the ground.

“I am excited to come back to Tampa Bay and build on the progress made during last season,” said Wasil.  “Having the opportunity to work with the same coaching staff and a core group of players from 2012 brings a feeling of cohesiveness and confidence for the upcoming 2013 season.”

Serini (6-3, 315, Florida International) agreed to a two-year deal.  He was the only player to appear in and start all 18 games for the Storm in 2012, despite beginning the season with a broken hand.  The former FIU standout finished his collegiate career with the Panthers as the only player in the school’s history to play in and start every single game during his tenure.

AFL free-agency begins Monday, October 29 at 12:01 AM.  Teams will be free to sign any player excluding those that ended the 2012 season on injured reserve and have not yet been medically cleared.

The Five-Time World Champion Tampa Bay Storm was awarded the 2012 AFL Support Staff of the Year.  2013 season tickets are now available for more information call 813.301.6600 or visitwww.tampabaystorm.com. Spokane, WA – Cliff Dukes and the Tampa Bay Storm defense combined for four sacks of Shock quarterback Casey Hansen en route to defeating the Spokane Shock in a fiery ArenaBowl XXIII rematch, 51-42 in front of 9,320 fans at the Veterans Memorial Arena in Spokane, WA late Friday night.   Dukes recorded 4.5 tackles and 2.5 sacks along with two fumble recoveries and a forced fumble. The Storm defense held the Shock scoreless for 31 minutes and 34 seconds between the 11:21 mark in the second quarter and 9:47 mark in the fourth prior to an Emory Sammons one yard touchdown run.   Shock quarterback Hansen, in his first game back with the Shock since the 2009 af2 season, had an impressive start, but was unable to continue any early success because of the Storm’s defensive pressure, and ended the game 25-of-43 passing for 288 yards, four touchdowns and one interception.   Wide receiver Huey Whittaker led all Storm receivers with 11 receptions for 123 yards and three touchdowns in the win over his former club. Wide receiver Amarri Jackson also recorded three touchdowns in his third consecutive multi-touchdown game.   Spokane’s Khreem Smith stood out defensively for the Shock (4-6).  He recorded five tackles along with two sacks of Storm quarterback Brian Zbydniewski as the Storm offensive line was hit by injuries throughout the game, including an injury to Tom Kaleita.   The Storm (4-6) won their second game in a row for the first time this season behind an impressive first half showing from Zbydniewski, who completed 15-of-17 passing for 154 yards and four touchdowns in the first half. Three of those first half touchdowns came during the second quarter as the Storm erased a 13-7 first quarter deficit.  The Storm did not trail throughout the remainder of the game. Zbydniewski finished with 23 completions from 33 attempts for 223 yards and six touchdowns.   Storm defensive lineman Jermaine Smith, who was called into offensive line duties to aid a depleted offensive line, had a record setting night, as he blocked two point after attempts in the fourth quarter and moved him into first All-Time in blocked kicks with 14, passing James Baron. Smith’s third quarter sack gave him 46.5 for his career, fourth most in AFL history.   The Storm will head back out on the road again following next week’s bye to take on the division rival Georgia Force, Saturday, June 4th 2011 at the Arena at Gwinnett Center in Duluth, GA. Be sure to tune to 1250 AM-WHNZ for all of the Storm Radio Network’s coverage or NiFTyTV.com’s AFL Player to watch the game online.

Dallas Vigilantes 67, Tampa Bay Storm 55 Saturday April 23, 2011 St. Pete Times Forum – 12,226

Tampa, Fl.– Wide receiver Huey Whittaker led all receivers with 15 catches for 193 yards and five touchdowns, but that was not enough to counter Dallas, as the Storm fell to the Vigilantes 67-to-61 in front of 12,226 fans at the St. Pete Times Forum on Saturday night.   The Vigilantes (4-2) scored three times on the ground and twice on special teams in their first win over the Storm in the franchise’s young history. Quarterback Dan Raudebaugh added four touchdowns through the air off of 13 completions for 202 yards and no interceptions in the win for the Vigilantes.   Vigilantes’ utility man Matt Fields stood out for Dallas in the win. Fields was accountable for four of Dallas’s touchdowns, scoring twice on the ground off of three rushes for 16 yards and twice more receiving off of 5 catches going for 116 yards.   The Storm (2-4) started the game quickly, with Quarterback Grant Gregory completing seven-of-10 passes for 118 yards and three touchdowns in the first quarter. Gregory spread the ball around effectively, hitting four different receivers in the game, but the connection with Whittaker proved to be the most potent for the Storm as the two former South Florida Bulls connected in the endzone five times. Gregory completed 24-of-42 passes for 275 yards and those five touchdowns.   The Storm could not take advantage of their hot start however, as several offensive and special teams miscues allowed Dallas to take control of the proceedings in the third quarter.   Recently acquired Storm quarterback Brian Zbydniewski was five-of-six passing for 107 yards and three touchdowns in relief of Gregory during the fourth quarter, helping the Storm close what was a twenty point gap with 2:46 left in the fourth to just six as time expired. The final two touchdowns were scored in 12 seconds apart during the last 12 seconds of the game.   The Storm head back out on the road next week as they take on the Milwaukee Mustangs Saturday, April 30th 2011 at the Bradley Center in Milwaukee, WI. The game can be heard on 620 AM-WDAE with coverage beginning at 7:30 PM EST.
