Divorce in San Francisco
By Joshua Ott on February 28, 2016
Chip Kelly, Trent Baalke and Jed York need to do something and do it quickly. Time is running out for them to make the moves that could alter the entire outcome of the 2016 Draft. They hold the 7th pick in the Draft and have needs all over… Offensive Line, Wide Receiver, Defensive Backs, Defensive Line and yes even at the QB spot. It’s not like they don’t have a Quarterback, they do, but they have already burned that bridge and now they have cornered themselves into a scenario that the only way out is to trade Colin Kaepernick or release him.
Colin’s numbers have dipped, but that is a product of the system, he played well enough to lead his team to the Super Bowl under Harbaugh. Then all hell broke loose… Turmoil struck the organization; Kaepernick went from the savior to the red headed step child almost overnight.
Harbaugh left, players gave up on football and Kap watched his offensive line pretty much stop trying. It’s hard to be an efficient passer in the NFL when you are getting sacked, hurried or rushed every play. NO, Kap wasn’t the problem; the problem rests with the organization from the top.
With all that being said, there is a way to right the wrong, to adjust the sails and stop fighting the waves… The 49ers should trade Colin Kaepernick to the Cleveland Browns. Yes… that would do the trick, and here’s why.
Colin doesn’t want to stay with the 49ers, the 49ers have shown their hand and it’s blatantly obvious they don’t want him there so why not make all parties happy? Hue Jackson in Cleveland has always had a love affair with Colin, and I think those two would be a perfect match. Colin would have one amazing offensive line, a city that would embrace him and a coach that would get the best out of his skillset.
No matter the offer the 49ers should move him to the Browns… The Niners want a new signal caller, I believe they want Goff, although many think they want Wentz… but look how things would work in their favor if they did trade Kap.
The Titans are sitting with the 1st pick, they drafted Mariota last season so they don’t need a QB, the Browns pick 2nd, with the trade they would no longer be in the market for a QB. The Chargers have Rivers, no need for a QB with the 3rd selection. The Cowboys are the wildcard here, they need a QB but will they swallow their pride and finally admit it or do they draft BPA? After that you have the Jags and Ravens… neither are searching for a QB, so unless a major trade happens the 49ers could have their pick of Goff, Wentz or Lynch if they decide to draft a QB at the 7th spot.
The Browns are holding the power in their hands, that’s odd to say but it’s true. They could wait to see if the Niners release Colin, they could offer a 3rd or 4th round pick or they could ignore it all together and take a QB at 2. Personally I’ve been a fan of Colin since he was in College and I would love to see him in a Browns Jersey but not at the cost of a high draft pick, Colin will be coming off surgery and learning a new system, so there will be a steep learning curve, but Hue has proven over and over that he knows how to connect with QB’s and help them reach their full potential.
If the two teams don’t reach an agreement I expect the Browns to draft Wentz, he has the highest ceiling in my opinion, he reminds me of another Carson… yes Palmer. They share the same size, same big arm but Wentz is more athletic. Either way with Wentz or Kaepernick the Browns will finally be heading in the right direction.
The 49ers can’t afford another distraction or another failure of a season. Since Harbaugh left they have seen some extremely hard times, moving on from a Colin, rebuilding on both sides and getting a fresh start is what that organization really needs. Moving on, breaking up, getting a divorce, cutting ties… however you look at it, it needs to happen for the 49ers to right their ship, at this point they are grossly off course and the longer they have distractions the longer it will take to put their organization on the winning track.
File the paperwork, stop talking about it, stop lying saying you want to work things out and do the right thing Trent… File those divorce papers so Kaepernick can move on, so you can move on and so your organization can move on start fresh.
