Lightning grind Blues 2-1

By on October 14, 2017

Tampa, Fla. – – The Tampa Bay Lightning took the ice tonight for their fourth regular season home game.   The pre-game Ceremony was a wonderful tribute to the 25 year anniversary of the Tampa Bay Lightning with many of the original team members took the ice on a red carpet along with their founder Phil Esposito.

The puck drops and the Bolts looked much better defensively, either they are starting to get that they have to back check and play defense to win games, or the Blues aren’t that much of a threat.  Time will tell.  The Lightning limited the shot count of their opponent to 5 shots during the second period. That’s the best defensive period they have had so far.    Coach Jon Cooper said,  “We gave up 15 shots and 8 of them were needless.”

Tyler Johnson scored a power play goal at 8:20 in the second period, as he was able to rip one by young net minder Jake Allen, who up to then was playing quite a game.  Hint, if your playing a team like Tampa Bay, stay out of the penalty box.  With their high powered offense you want to limit their man advantages.  The Bolts ended through period 2 with some pretty impressive stats; 22 shots,  1 of 1 on the power play,  Face-off win 56%,  blocked shots 6, take aways 6, and  hits 17.

Five games into the regular season looks like they are settling in and the offense is getting the defensive help to win games.

In what was seemingly a quiet game, Nikita Kucherov managed to dazzle the fans with a beautiful backhanded goal at 6:27 in the third.  His new line-mates, Captain Steven Stamkos and Vladislav Namestnikov got the helpers.  The Saturday night Amalie crowd was alive.

Andrei Vasilevskiy was solid in net, as he was tested 27 times.  The Blues Vladimir Tarasenko was able to slip one by him at 16:37 in the third to cut the lead in half.

The Blues pulled their goalie at the end for an extra skater, but were unable to tie the score.  The Bolts won 2-1.

This is the kind of play they want as a team, well rounded covering all sides of the ice.  Andrei Vasilevskiy once again proved why he is the starting goaltender for this young team.  Vasilevskiy is so humble and hard working, he knows he definitely played a better game tonight than any so far.

The Lightning take to the road to face the Red Wings, New Jersey Devils and Columbus Blue Jackets.  They will be back on home ice on Saturday October 21 to face the defending Stanley Cup Champion Pittsburgh Penguins for the second time in seven days.
