Tempers Boyle, but Bolts pick up two Points

By on December 21, 2015

lightning_new_altThe Lightning returned home from their most recent Meatloaf road trip to face the Ottawa Senators at the Amalie Arena. Tampa Bay started the game four points behind their Atlantic Division foes.

At almost the middle of the season, The Lightning start a very important home stand against the Senators. The Senators and Panthers (Tampa’s rival team to the South) currently hold the two wild-card spots in the Eastern Conference. The Lightning went into tonight needing a  win to get it started off right.  Tampa Bay goalie Ben Bishop has been pretty successful against his former team, the Lightning are 7-0-3 against the Senators when Ben Bishop has been in the net. Tampa recently beat the Senators right here on home ice just 10 days ago on December 10th.

This game was hot as soon as the puck dropped. Fights, game misconducts, unsportsmanlike conduct, instigating, hooking, tripping and interference were the penalties handed out.

The sell out holiday crowd here at the “Oil Can” have definitely been treated to a “good ole hockey game.” At the end of the first period there was a total of 43 penalty minutes between the two teams with the score was Lightning 2, Senators 1.

At 2:45 in the second period, the Lightning scored a garbage goal, but the goal immediately went under review right here on the ice by the two officials on a tablet. The coach’s challenge equaled two referees, a tablet, and a lot of conversation. Good goal! Scored by #10 Mike Angelidis, with the assists to #46 Mike Blunden and ##42 Jonathan Marchessault.  Angelidis on the doorstep banging away.

At about eight minutes into the second period, the unfortunate news of another injury for Tampa Bay was delivered. #11 Brian Boyle will not return to the game (upper body.) This is now the tenth man currently injured for the Lightning.

This injury list looks more like a game roster. Could this signify strength and conditioning, the lesser practice time due to the collective bargaining agreement, or just plain bad luck?

#25 Matt Carle

#22 Erik Condra

# 27 Jonathan Drouin

#9 Tyler Johnson

#18 Ondrej Palat

#13 Cedric Paquette

#47 Joel Vermin

#23 JT Brown

#65 Yanni Gourde

#11 Brian Boyle

Hmmm, game roster….

As I sat and pondered that thought, the Senators scored at 14:28 in the second. Goal by #65 Erik Karlsson , assist #68 Mike Hoffman. Ottawa made it a one goal game.

At 9:56 in the third period #51Valtteri Filppula was awarded a penalty shot, but unable to get it by Ottawa’s young netminder #30 Andrew Hammond. That seemed to igninte a spark for the Lightning. For the next minute and a half they were able to cycle the puck around in the Senators zone, get some great shots off, looked like a power play.

The Senators finally get the clear, and headed off to Lightning territory. At 14:55 #90 Vladislav Namestnikov committed a high sticking penalty and put the Senators with a man advantage. The Lightning successfully killed off the penalty, and resume even strength.

With only 1:33 left to play in the game, #17 Alex Killorn skates one in toward an empty Senators net and GOAL! Just 13 seconds later, with the Senators net still empty, #91 Steven Stamkos wrists one down the ice and it’s Stammer time!

The Lightning win 5-2. They will take home ice again Tuesday night to face the West Coast Vancouver Canucks that picked up a particapation point by losing in a shoot out to the Atlantic Division Florida Panthers.  #BeTheThunder
