Clearwater, Fla.—Lefty JA Happ and righty Glenn Sparkman pitched in an extended spring training game against the Phillies on Saturday with no problems.

Happ, out since leaving a start against the Orioles on April 16th with an inflamed left elbow went 3 1/3 shutout innings allowing just two hits.  His fastball topped out at 92 during his 48-pitch outing.

“My first time back it felt good,” said Happ, “It was good, I was just happy to get through the three innings and still feeling strong.”

As to a time line for his return Happ said, “We’re going on a regular five day from here.  Had a couple of times before this but I think five days from now I will throw again looking like probably over in Dunedin.   Then we will kind of make a decision from there.  At that point, I should be up to 60-65 pitches hopefully and as long as the next five days go well recovery wise we should be on track.  Then it will be just a matter of if we need to go another one after that.”

Sparkman (broken right thumb) made his second appearance Saturday in an extended spring game.

Sparkman the Blue Jays Rule 5 Pick went one no hit inning throwing 14-pitches with a 93 MPH fastball.

“I’m feeling better,” said Sparkman, “I will pitch again in two-three days and go two innings.”
