Rays Cash In First Win
By ROCKET SPORTS and ENTERTAINMENT NETWORK on April 9, 2015
St. Petersburg, Fla. — The Tampa Bay Rays used a quality start from Jake Odorizzi to give Kevin Cash his first victory as a big league manager with 2-0 win over the Baltimore Orioles. Odorizzi went 6 2/3 yielding only 2 hits and striking out seven Orioles.
The Rays scored one in the 6th by drawing 4 straight walks. Two issued by starter Miguel Gonzalez, the second of which sent Gonzalez to the showers. Then in relief Brian Matusz walked pinch hitter Brandon Guyer to load the sacks and then Gonzalez walked Logan Forsythe to force home Evan Longoria who was on third courtesy of the first Gonzalez walk. All the free passes came after two outs.
The Rays went on to tack on a State Farm run in the 8th after an Evan Longoria double and a Desmond Jennings single.
Recap from Kris Dunn on Kevin Cash
Kevin Cash will never forget this day.
The Rays were able to scrape together a couple runs tonight and the bullpen did it’s job.
Jake Odorizzi was strong in his 6.2 innings, striking out seven. He only allowed two hits. Brad Boxberger struck out the side in the ninth inning to record his first save of the season. The win was extra special for manager Kevin Cash.
I had a chance to catch up with the Rays skipper after the game and he was all smiles. He seemed a bit surprised when he walked into a dark room with loud music.
“Let’s do it about 99 more times that will work…I didn’t know what the heck was going on. I had heard rumors about what went on in here.” Kevin Cash
However, it’s something he said he will never forget…Cheers to that Kevin.
