Young Thug’s “I’m Up” Mixtape Serves Disappointment

If you’re not familiar with Jeffrey Lamar Williams, better known by his stage name Young Thug, you probably heard such songs such as “Lifestyle” or his most well-known single “Danny Glover.” Lately Young Thug has been releasing multiple projects such as Slime Season and Slime Season 2 (both of which will be reviewed momentarily) and his most recent project I’m Up. Slime Season, in my opinion, focused more on quality rather than quantity. Thug provided catchy songs such as “Stunna” “Quarterback” “Rarri” and even included a song he performed with Lil Wayne titled “Take Care”. As you sit down and listen to Slime Season you hear nothing but good quality music, each song making you want to hear the next or making you want to leave the song on repeat. Another reason as to why I enjoyed listening to Slime Season was Thug’s “I don’t care what you think about me attitude”. Within the mixtape, Thug (of course) raps with a “southern twang” and even continues to mumble on certain songs but that’s what makes Young Thug so unique. Go ahead; listen to “Danny Glover” whenever you get the chance; Thug is mumbling throughout the song but he uses a beat that was produced by 808 Mafia that makes you want to blast your radio speakers and headphones.

However, although I enjoyed listening to Slime Season, I do feel like Young Thug rushed the project and just decided to make music for quick recognition. Same goes for his previous project Slime Season 2. I did not enjoy this mixtape as much as Slime Season. Here Thug displays a lazy musician by providing his audience with halfassed songs such as “Big Racks” “Thief in the Night” and many more. The only songs that were catchy enough to catch my attention were “Don’t Know,” “Hey, I” and “Twerk It.” So for a quick rating on Slime Season I give Thug a 3.5/5 and for Slime Season 2, 2.5/5.

With that out of the way let’s discuss Thug’s most recent project I’m Up. I did not enjoy this project at all. Not one bit. Young Thug had promised via Twitter that I’m Up (previously titled Slime Season 3) would be worth listening to and claimed it would be just as good as Slime Season and Slime Season 2. Such high expectations for a mixtape with such poor quality. Each song felt as if they were just one takes, they were rushed, and the lyrics were weak. The only good thing about the mixtape was the instrumentals that Thug used. The only reason to why Thug failed with I’m Up is because he tried way too hard to be like Future. If you don’t follow Thug or Future via Twitter, here’s a recap of the situation…

Future announced he had been signed to Apple Music and Thug later tweeted “Boy slow down dropping all that BS music” Thug continued saying “Yo family/team wish u was like me nigga” Thug then continued by saying “I hope Apple save u lil niggas… Or church!!!” finally Thug finished his rant by posting a picture of a goat with Future’s head attached to it. To those who are not familiar with slang when someone calls you a G.O.A.T. they’re calling you the “Greatest Of All Time” ironically Thug posted this picture to degrade Future. Later Thug begins to swamp Twitter with advertisements for I’m Up. Of course, most Young Thug fans enjoyed listening to the album. I remained neutral. So my rating for I’m Up is a negative number. Young Thug either needs to improve as a musician or retire.
